Should I give my pet dewormer with food or on an empty stomach?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually there is no recommended time of day to give dewormer. If instructions were supplied with the medication I would follow those. I would try to give with a meal in the evening to increase the amount of time it is in the body. Kisses to Cookie!

Hello. Most wormers can be administered either way. I would hid the wormer in something tasty like peanut butter, cream cheese, Cheese Whiz or something similar, but sticky enough to prevent Bruno from finding & spitting out the medication. If Peggy has a large worm burden (lots of worms) then she likely feels sick and doesn't want to eat, and likely won't want to eat until the worms are gone. If the medication that your vet gave is a dewormer (typically a liquid called Panacur/Fenbendazole), then you can give it without food. This might clear out the worms and get Peggy eating again. If the medication is an antibiotic (Metronidazole, Amoxyclav), then this needs to be given with food. You can also talk to your vet about trying an anti-nausea medication to see if this helps with the appetite. If Peggy has abdominal pain, or is vomiting, please have her seen right away as high worm burdens can lead to a very life-threatening condition called intussusception. I recommend offering a small meal or treat beforehand so that there is a little food in her stomach before getting these medications. She can also get a small tasty treat afterward so she knows she a good girl! I hope this is helpful - she is VERY cute!

Poor kitty. You are ok to give dewormer with just about any other medication, even same day, since it has very few medication interactions.
