How to give dog deworming pills safely: empty stomach or with food?

Ideall, you should given the tablet with small amount of food on empty stomach and feed about 1hr later. Please ,remember to repeat the treatment in 2 weeks time.

If Peggy has a large worm burden (lots of worms) then she likely feels sick and doesn't want to eat, and likely won't want to eat until the worms are gone. If the medication that your vet gave is a dewormer (typically a liquid called Panacur/Fenbendazole), then you can give it without food. This might clear out the worms and get Peggy eating again. If the medication is an antibiotic (Metronidazole, Amoxyclav), then this needs to be given with food. You can also talk to your vet about trying an anti-nausea medication to see if this helps with the appetite. If Peggy has abdominal pain, or is vomiting, please have her seen right away as high worm burdens can lead to a very life-threatening condition called intussusception. I usually recommend that the medicine be directly given in the dog's mouth instead of mixing in the food. Some dogs are very good at avoiding the medicine in their food and may spit it out. In these cases you may not know if he got the medicine or not. Coating the pill, or mixing liquid medication with something tasty is the best way to get them to eat it. Pills can be covered in butter, ghee, or peanut butter to help make them more tasty. Liquid medication can be mixed with liv52, or other supplements that taste good, but avoid giving more than is recommended on the bottle. Do not try to stick pills into Pillu's mouth, as he may have an unknown vaccination history and you would be at risk for a contracting a disease.

You want to make sure your pet eats first before giving antibiotics or it can cause an upset stomach, so it’s best tot give it after.
