Is my dog dehydrated? How to check & prevent it in hot weather?

In dogs, we can sometimes tell dehydration is present if we look at their gums and they seem dry or tacky instead of wet/covered in saliva. In some cases we can also see what is called "skin tenting" where if we pull up the extra skin between the shoulder blades and release it, it doesn't immediately snap back into place. These signs, however, occur with severe dehydration. If your dog was vomiting repeatedly for a day, he is likely dehydrated. He should go to the vet for an exam, fluids to rehydrate him, and an injection to help stop the vomiting. They may recommend testing (x-rays and bloodwork) to try to determine the cause of vomiting to more accurately recommend treatment.

You will need to make sure Shiro is kept indoors during the day in the air conditioning or with a fan. Do not let him stay outside. Make sure he always has cool water to drink. Walk him early in the morning and later in the evening when it's cooler. I hope this helps!

It could be that the amount of water that he is drinking is appropriate for his weight and age, without any other clinical signs I would not worry too much. Just make sure that you change his water regularly so that it is always fresh. If you are really worried, you could add plain lukewarm water to his biscuits, leave them to soak 5 minutes and the offer.

I would first avoid those activities that cause overheating in your pet to begin with. Then if he does get overheated, cooling him off with topical cool water or a water bath is ideal. Just make sure he doesn't drop his temperature too low and never ever use ice cubes or fans to speed up the process. Use caution as wel because overheated pets can have a life threatening heat stroke if their core body temperature gets above 105 degrees Fahrenheit or so.

Dogs can handle the heat fine if they are lazy and not expending much energy. You can give him cool water with a small amount of chicken broth in it to encourage drinking, or add some water to his food. Using a fan to circulate the air may cool you both. Take him for a slow walk tonight after it cools down. It doesn't sound like there is anything wrong, he'll probably perk up when it cools down. If you feed him canned food that has more water and moisture in it thus they drink less water. In warmer weather and with exercise I bet that Toby will drink more to compensate. Always having fresh waster available will allow him to drink when he is ready and needs to. You can add water gradually to his dry food to trick him in to taking in more water. If you find that this doesn't work and he doesn't drink when hot and over heats then I would have your Vet do an exam. Here are a few other tips! You can try different types of bowels and have multiple down, raise the water bowl up since he is a big dog, make sure the bowls are clean, add ice cubes to the water, purchase a water fountain, add low sodium chicken broth or bone broth to the water. You are a great pet owner for being concerned about this and planning ahead! In the oppressive heat, heat stroke can happen very quickly. Some dogs can learn to adapt to the heat and are better able to handle it (think dogs that work as partners for soldiers in Iraq or Search and Rescue dogs). Signs of heatstroke include: Increased heart rate Excessive panting Increased salivation Bright red tongue Red or pale gums Thick, sticky saliva Depression Weakness Dizziness Vomiting (sometimes with blood) Diarrhea As heatstroke progresses, it can cause seizures, coma, cardiac arrest, and death. Exercising early in the morning during the cooler hours, providing lots of fresh cool water and finding places to exercise in the shade (like a nature trail hike) can help keep your dog cool. Several companies make Cool Coats that reflect heat and funnel it away from your dog. Also, find other ways for your dog to get exercise or even exercise their mind. You would be amazed at how tiring this is for dogs- take a Nosework class and your dog can learn to find different scents and you can practice at home in the house. Pick up a few puzzle toys and let your dog learn to find food and treats in the puzzles. Also, you could see if your dog might enjoy a swim-- even a little splash pool at home can be fun for the dog or some hose play- Don't overdo a dog's can get very sick if they drink too much water when playing.
