My dog is inactive and not drinking in a hot house. Is he okay?

Yes, some dogs will choose to be more active during the cooler part of the day. If Charlie isn’t more active in the evening, or his laziness is associated with a poor appetite, increased breathing rate, vomiting or any other signs, it would be best to have him checked out by a vet.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Heat could defenitely cause your puppies to not want to eat. With that heat it is very important to have an area of shade for them to hide, as well as free access to cool water at all times. Ideally, have a sprinkler or some water source (kiddy pool filled with water) that they can go in to cool down. Dogs overheat very easily and can get very sick with overheating. If you feed him canned food that has more water and moisture in it thus they drink less water. In warmer weather and with exercise I bet that Toby will drink more to compensate. Always having fresh waster available will allow him to drink when he is ready and needs to. You can add water gradually to his dry food to trick him in to taking in more water. If you find that this doesn't work and he doesn't drink when hot and over heats then I would have your Vet do an exam. Here are a few other tips! You can try different types of bowels and have multiple down, raise the water bowl up since he is a big dog, make sure the bowls are clean, add ice cubes to the water, purchase a water fountain, add low sodium chicken broth or bone broth to the water. If his gums are pale or blue, seek veterinary attention immediately as this may indicate bleeding or a lack of oxygen. If his gums are sticky or dry, seek veterinary attention. He may be dehydrated. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the increased water drinking is only after playing (no matter the length of time) in 95 F weather then that is normal. That is hot weather for a thick coated dog. I would limit his time outside to only 5-10 mins when it is that hot. At this time I do not think he needs blood work. If he is drinking a lot with minimal activity in the cool weather then maybe he does. Good luck!

If it's quite hot where you are, that can explain why Snowball isn't playing as much as usual. That would be a good thing, as playing too much in the heat will lead to heat stroke, which is too often fatal. I would keep an eye on her, and make sure she stays as cool as possible. If this behavior does continue, a check up with the vet to be safe would be recommended. I hope this helps!
