Why does my dog suddenly dart up and run like he's in sudden pain?

That is quite strange behavior! Does he act like something is getting his behind? tucking his tail and running away from something. If so, I would have his anal glands checked by your vet. If not, then you may just want to have a thorough exam done to ensure nothing else is hurting or causing him to be so anxious. Your vet will also be able to check his eyes and ears to ensure nothing is throwing his senses off. If all is normal, your vet may recommend an anti-anxiety medicine to help calm him. If this happens mostly at night your vet may recommend only to give it at night. You could also try Benadryl before bedtime but unfortunately, this isn't always strong enough. There are many possible reasosn but anal gland discomfort and spinal pain are common reasons for this sort of occasional, darting pain. I would recommend getting her glands checked as well as a full physical exam for any obvious causes or signs of discomfort such as reduced muscle in the hind legs etc

Poor Titus! I can understand you concern-it’s never easy when there is something wrong with our pet and we can’t figure it out! You indicate that Titus is a fairly small little guy at 7lb, but you didn’t say if it was a front or back leg that is causing him issues. If it is a back leg then one of the most common problems we can see with small breed dogs is what is known as a medically luxating patella. The patella is the knee cap, and it can slip out of place either when the dog is moving, or in some cases when they are lying down relaxed. It feels very strange for the dog and a ‘hopping’ or jumping gait is very commonly seen. Another cause for sudden movements like this is parasites such as fleas, which will suddenly bite the dog and cause pain. I would recommend videoing the episodes when they happen so your vet can have a good visual of what you are seeing. Also discuss the above potential causes with your vet and see if either of them fits with what is found on physical exam.

Poor Little Man. I recommend to have an x-ray to look for evidence of disease in his spine. This sudden pain could come from many things including intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, an anal gland infection or a pinched nerve. The x-ray could show evidence of the first two diseases. Discuss start medications like steroids and muscle relaxants with your vet as well. Have the anal glands checked as well. It is possible this is an arthritis flare up or some other painful event (spinal stroke, Embolism, slipped disk, or other). It is also possible he is recovering from a seizure- which can result in abnormal Behavior for up to a day. There are also neurological diseases and infectious diseases that can cause weakness and odd behavior. Take Casper to your local vet who can likely help narrow down the problem with a good physical and neurological exam and can prescribe pain medication if needed.

I understand this is making you nervous, I would be a bit worried as well. I'd recommend having a lameness exam done as well as a physical exam. The vet may want to do blood work, a urinalysis, and x-rays. I hope this helps.
