My dog suddenly cries out in pain with no obvious injury. What's wrong?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Beau isn't feeling well. Crying intermittently with no external injuries can be caused by a number of factors. If he is reluctant to walk or limping, then either a soft tissue injury in a joint/fracture/ or torn ligament is possible, however this you would expect to see some limping. Puppies can also get 'growing pains' and conditions of their joints, which affect all of their joints equally, so they are just reluctant to move. This can be incredibly painful and requires strong pain medication. The other common cause of crying out can be gastric pain. This can be caused by Beau getting into something he shouldn't have (bones, garbage, raw food, socks, underwear, etc) and his abdomen being very sorry. Usually with this you will see a reluctance to eat, possibly vomiting/diarrhea, and sometimes pain when you push on his abdomen. If this is the case I strongly suggest to stop the Deramaxx (hard on the gut, especially so young), and to have him re-checked by your vet and x-rays performed. An ultrasound may also be needed to make sure he doesn't have a peritonitis (infection in his abdominal cavity). He could also have a gastritis from worms, so making sure he is up to date on his worming is needed. A fever can also cause animals to feel unwell, so a full physical exam including his temperature is important. I would strongly suggest a re-visit with your vet, and they will likely need to do more tests, like an x-ray as mentioned, or if no answer is found there, or if Beau has a fever some bloodwork may be needed. Did the veterinarian give you any medication to help with pain? If not I would highly encourage you to call tomorrow and request something for pain management. Also, is he limping or holding that leg up? If not then I would be suspicious that something else may be bothering him. Often I find neck or back pain present on dogs who “cry out” for no known reason. Of course many other possibilities exist as well. Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Charlie sounds like he is having an issue that comes and goes. The most common causes of lameness in his back legs at his age are a ligament tear, knee cap luxation (moves out of its normal groove), followed by a foreign object stuck in his paw. It is also possible that he simply strained a hip muscle. No matter the case, he needs to be evaluated by a vet to determine exactly which. He may just need a little rest and anti-inflammatory therapy, but a sedated exam and radiographs may be needed to rule out significant disease that could need surgery to fix. Do not give anything over the counter for his discomfort as those medications can be quite harmful to Charlie. Keep him from running around and playing too hard until you can get him in to be evaluated by a veterinarian. While I'd recommend having him seen as soon as you can, his condition should be okay to wait for a day or two if you can't get into your vet right away. However, if his pain is unbearable, you may want to take him to an emergency vet tonight. Hope this helps, and I hope Charlie gets to feeling better soon!

Poor Bloo! He could have strained a ligament or muscle causing him pain. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem within the next day or two. Until he sees the vet, rest him. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. The vet can diagnose what is causing him pain, and can treat him for it. The vet also prescribe pain medications as needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

The symptoms you are describing can be caused by many things and would be best to have a veterinarian perform Diagnostics to rule out different causes. I would be concerned about a foreign body obstruction, systemic disease or infection, or trauma-related. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. They can then prescribe the correct and safest medications for her condition. I hope this helps and I wish Lazy a speedy recovery!

Cooper needs to be examined by the veterinarian. It sounds something is wrong and something is hurting him. Not being able to walk well is very worrisome. Although the pain could be anywhere, lesions in the neck/spine or pancreatitis could account for this behavior. Both of these conditions need treatment and this should be sooner rather than later. Copper needs a physical exam to begin figuring out what is going on. He needs the correct diagnosis so that he gets the correct treatment. Have him examined today.
