Dog recovering from parvo: Is dark, thick stool normal after parvo?

Yes, the diarrhea will persist for several days after parvo viral infections. More due to the fact that intestinal lining is what is affected from virus. It takes time for the lining to repair itself and for absorption to return to normal. Very black tarry stool indicates upper gastro-intestinal bleeding. It could be residual from stomach ulceration. If she has more black stool I would call your Vet and ask if that is the color of her diarrhea while she was hospitalized. They may want to add pepcid or another antacid if she isn't on one. I'm very sorry that Rio has parvo, but it's good news that his appetite has increased and the consistence of his poop has increased. The tarry consistence does indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, so he's not out of the woods yet. It does take some time for a dog to fully recover from parvo, and it can be weeks before a dog is back to normal. The acute phase is between 7-14 days. A sign of how well a dog is doing is how well he is eating. If he is eating and there is no vomiting and diarrhea, then the prognosis is good. Make sure he does stay hydrated because dehydration is the number one cause of death in these dogs. Offer Rio small amounts of Pediasure using a syringe or small turkey baster. Give any medications prescribed by the vet, and if he starts vomiting, his stool gets very bloody, he stops eating, or he becomes extremely lethargic, rush him back into a vet immediately. Black feces are concerning for digested blood. I recommend to collect a sample of the stool and take it into your veterinarian’s office for an example. They can determine if blood is present And if further action is needed. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If Choko is recovering from parvo, you shouldn't see any blood in the feces, and it should resemble normal feces in color and texture. You would also see the dog eating, drinking, and not vomiting as well as having more energy.

Yes, this would be expected as the surgical site is likely oozing a small amount of blood causing the stool to become tarry black. If this does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck her. I would also recommend checking her gum color and ensuring it is nice and pink. I think his stool looks pretty good. I would not worry about the color. The yellow specks could just be undigested food. Don't worry about it too much right now. Just keep an eye on the stools and if these yellow specks continue you may want to have your vet check the stool for parasites.

Yes, it's normal for him to still be tired and sleepy at this point - he's been very sick for several days, and it will take time for him to get his energy back. It's very common for puppies to not have a bowel movement for a few days when they haven't been eating - if nothing is going in, then there's nothing there to come out :) Even though he's eating again now, it will take 2-3 days for any poop to be formed - so I wouldn't worry about this at all. He will poop when he's ready. The yelping means that his stomach is probably still a bit sore - this is to be expected, given the severity of his illness. It may take several more days for him to be completely back to normal, so be patient and give him time to recover.
