Puppy recovering from parvo: Is black, tarry diarrhea normal?

Poor Scooter. I am so glad that she is doing better. All the signs you describe seems like she is improving. The tarry black stool looks like either digested blood or it could be a side effect of pepto if you gave her any of that. If she is eating and drinking and starting to become more active then I think she is on the mends! With her being so small, you could continue the pedialyte for a few more days until you are confident that she is feeling 100% better.

I'm very sorry that Rio has parvo, but it's good news that his appetite has increased and the consistence of his poop has increased. The tarry consistence does indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, so he's not out of the woods yet. It does take some time for a dog to fully recover from parvo, and it can be weeks before a dog is back to normal. The acute phase is between 7-14 days. A sign of how well a dog is doing is how well he is eating. If he is eating and there is no vomiting and diarrhea, then the prognosis is good. Make sure he does stay hydrated because dehydration is the number one cause of death in these dogs. Offer Rio small amounts of Pediasure using a syringe or small turkey baster. Give any medications prescribed by the vet, and if he starts vomiting, his stool gets very bloody, he stops eating, or he becomes extremely lethargic, rush him back into a vet immediately. Yes, this would be expected as the surgical site is likely oozing a small amount of blood causing the stool to become tarry black. If this does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck her. I would also recommend checking her gum color and ensuring it is nice and pink. Black tarry stools can be observed with upper gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Things like parvovirus, gastrointestinal ulcers or parasites, among other possibilities can cause that. Black feces are concerning for digested blood. I recommend to collect a sample of the stool and take it into your veterinarian’s office for an example. They can determine if blood is present And if further action is needed. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Due to Destiny's age there aren't any home remedies if she truly has melena. It might just be residual from shock secondary to hypothermia. If she is acting fine otherwise I would hope her stool will return to a more normal color. Puppy poop is tarry and can be darker in color. It doesn't look like adult stool and hers wouldn't look like a puppy who is nursing. If she begins to get sick the best thing would be to take her to a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Destiny the very best!

In dogs infected with parvo virus, there can be long term health effects from the infection such as chronic gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend going on a sensitive stomach formula and adding in a probiotic to see if this helps. As always, check the stool for intestinal parasites to make sure a parasite is not the cause.
