My dog's hair won't grow back after haircut, and skin is dark. Why?

Dogs can experience changes in the color and consistency of the hair coat for a huge number of reasons. It is important to determine if Trey is itchy, losing hair, and developing redness or scaling of his skin, as these can all raise or lower suspicions of some conditions. Possible causes include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, mange, bacterial and/or fungal skin infections, sebaceous adenitis, nutritional changes, or many other conditions. While this is certainly not an emergency, I recommend discussing Trey's coat changes with his veterinarian, as he may need some diagnostic testing to get to the bottom of the situation. Skin darkening can occur due to natural aging, low level irritation from infection or allergies, a healed wound or changes in hormone levels from hypothyroidism. Poor Trixie! That is very concerning that she is losing weight and she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, parasite, kidney/liver disease, endocrine disease, etc. Your vet can run some lab-work to help diagnose and then determfine the best way to treat, depending on the cause. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications to help. You could also bathe her with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps with her skin condition.

Kesi may have one of a couple of different things happening to cause the color change in the hair. One possible reason is because there is some irritation of the skin. This can cause the hairs to grow darker, but usually only happens if the irritation has been going on for long time. If she is losing hair more often, is itchy or has more dandruff than normal, then she may have some irritation going on that will need treatment. Another possibility is that Kesi has a genetic condition that causes the hair to get darker or even get shorter. There is not much that can be done about these conditions, but the good news is they are not very harmful. Changes in temperature may also cause the hair to grow darker in certain breeds. This may explain why it would get darker after swimming in the sea. However, it would take longer than two days for the change in hair color to occur. Note if Kesi had any other changes in the past few months or year. This can help a veterinarian determine other causes if you would like to bring her in for a consult. I hope this helps.

It may be due to true skin problems like allergy or skin infection. However, if she doesn't show excessive skin itchiness or redness she may have hormonal problems (diabetes, underactive thyroid gland, overactive adrenal gland etc). You shoud get her checked by your vets. They are likely to recommend skin testing and blood test to find out what is going on.

She may have an endocrine disease, such as hypothyroidism (her thyroid gland isn't working right) or Cushing's disease (her adrenal glands are releasing too much cortisol). The darkening of the skin is due to a chronic inflammation, and the darker hair regrow could be completely normal. That could be completely response after the skin ''injuries'' you described. If she is not showing any other sign I would not be worried about it.
