My dog's stool is black after new food. Should I be concerned?

In the past 1 1/2 week I've changed dog food from taste of the wild, Pacific Stream to venture Pollack and pumpkin. I've notice with both dogs stool is black but solid. Does not look like blood. Also with there food I give them Opmega 3 6 9 treat. I'm concerned with the stool color. Should I be? Am I giving took much of a mineral?

Without seeing the stools myself it is hard for me to say. What you may consider black I may consider normal dark brown color. It may just be their GI tract getting used to processing the new food. If they are acting normally I would not be overly concerned.

Omegas are regularly recommended and are usually pretty benign to give however, they can interfere with clotting if not given the correct dose. Are you giving them a product made for dogs? If not, I suggest you do that. Humans and dogs need different ratios of the Omega 3 to Omega 6.

The change is stool color is probably from the medication or new supplement. It doesn’t look like it is from blood from the photo. As long as he’s feeling fine finish the antibiotics and check the stool after they are done. It should go back to his normal stool color. My dog eats human food and has black stool. Should I be concerned?

Black stool typically indicates the presence of digested blood, most commonly from parasites or ulceration of the stomach or intestines. If Selfie's diet contains a lot of bloody meat, this could explain the black stool. Otherwise, this is not a normal finding and should be addressed by a vet fairly urgently. Selfie may need deworming and antacid medications to protect her stomach. If she has an ulcer, these can progress and become quite severe if left untreated. I hope that all goes well!

Shades of stool color can vary widely from day to day, hour to hour, or (as you experienced) within the same bowel movement. Typically, diet and supplements are the main sources of changes in stool color, so the supplement that you're using may be to blame. The color of the supplement or food are less to blame for the color change than the way some of the vitamins and minerals digest. Regardless, since Chispas is still eating and acting normally, there's no cause for concern. Shades of brown in stool are all normal. However, colors like black, red, or white stool are all signs that something is amiss. Based on what you've described, I don't think you need to be concerned in the slightest!

Why is my dog's poop dark or black after switching dog food?

More than likely it is from the change in food but black, tarry stool can be a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding. You could take a sample to your vet, when you notice that it is black, and have it tested for blood. That way you will know if it is anything to worry about or just normal color change.

My dog had intestinal surgery. Is dark stool normal during recovery?

Yes, this would be expected as the surgical site is likely oozing a small amount of blood causing the stool to become tarry black. If this does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck her. I would also recommend checking her gum color and ensuring it is nice and pink. My dog's poop is black after eating blueberries. Is it serious?

Blueberries can definitely cause the stool to change color if enough were eaten, or if they caused some GI upset. If Leo's stool has returned to normal, I would continue to just monitor him, and make sure to only give approved treats and his food. If the dark stool returns, or he starts showing other signs of illness such as a tender stomach, not wanting to eat or drink, vomiting, etc, I would have him checked by your vet ASAP.

My dog's stools are often black after vomiting blood. Should I worry?

Black, tar-like stools are common with bleeding in the stomach, upper GI tract. Bleeding that occurs lower in the GI tract with have red blood in the stools. I have never needed a human test to check for blood in the GI tract. Gastroenteritis is a common cause for blood in vomit and/or stools. Some cases are mild and respond to medications and out-patient treatment, while others, such as HGE, require hospitalization, IV fluids, and IV medications. Some dogs will have very dark stools that are normal and do not contain blood.
