My dog's urine and stool color changed. Is it from meds or new food?

I agree that this poop is quite a bright color yellow! This is not normally caused by metronidazole, so it's hard to say why it might be happening. Poop can sometimes be yellow or orange in color, and it may not mean anything in particular... so I wouldn't necessarily be concerned unless it stays this was for several days in a row, or she's having other symptoms of a problem. If she's still acting normal and this stool is improved vs. yesterday (which I'm assuming it is, since it definitely looks better than bloody diarrhea!) it should be okay to continue on her meds as prescribed by your vet, and monitor for the next few days. If her stool is not back to normal within the next 3-5 days, or if she develops other new symptoms in the meantime, then I would recommend having her rechecked by your veterinarian.

The change is stool color is probably from the medication or new supplement. It doesn’t look like it is from blood from the photo. As long as he’s feeling fine finish the antibiotics and check the stool after they are done. It should go back to his normal stool color. Hello. If this is what his poop looks like now, I would not worry just because it was a little off color & smells. The medicine is probably doing this. As long as he continues to eat & drink, have normal, formed stools, finish his antibiotics as prescribe by your veterinarian & hopefully Billy will continue to do very well. In my experience, granular stool in ferrets is caused either by feeding a diet with bones or by an issue with the way the food is digested. The dark tarry stools can also be caused by certain foods or digested blood or bile. Bleeding in the intestinal tract can be caused by certain parasites or ulcers, both of which are fairly common in ferrets. Both of the medications prescribed are used to treat both conditions - metronidazole is an antiparasitic medication with some antibiotic properties, while omeprazole decreases acid production in the stomach. You may want to re-evaluate the diet you are feeding your ferrets, and ask your vet about running some tests to check for blood in the stool as well as to check how well the intestinal tract is digesting food. An abdominal ultrasound can be performed to see if there are any ulcers or masses present. I hope this helps!

Not typically. Metronidazole does not have any listed side effects like that. Some common side effects are: Nausea or vomiting. Diarrhea. Drooling. Gagging or regurgitation. Loss of appetite. Lethargy or fatigue. Blood or darkening of urine. Fever. So, If the stools are very dark brown that is not really a problem, but black, that is serious and you should call your vet. Black typically means there is bleeding somewhere in the GI tract. If he is straining to defecate he may be constipated but straining can also be from diarrhea (if the stools are very soft/watery). I really don't have quite enough information to be helpful so I think it is probably best if you call your vet. If you are seeing diarrhea or vomiting while on this antibiotic I would recommend discontinuing the drug and contacting the prescribing veterinarian to discuss this further.
