I cut my dog's quick. It's bleeding again. Will her paw get infected?

In general, a nail that is only cut a little and not too bad should not be a high risk of infection. Make sure to keep the nail clean and dry. Make sure that Poodle is not licking at the nail. Monitor it closely for any signs of a problem and have Poodle examined if needed. I hope this helps.

It is not likely that the nail became infected that quickly last night and it is more likely that the corn starch mixed with blood and moisture created a bad odor. I would leave the nail unwrapped. If you begin to see pus or any discharge at the site of the broken nail or any swelling of the toe, I would have Zoey examined by a veterinarian as she may need a course of an oral antibiotic. I would suggest soaking the foot in a solution of betadine and saline (so that you have a light brown solution). Soak the foot twice daily for 5-10 minutes at a time for 3-5 days and then stop. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that you accidentally cut Zena's nail too short today. As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

You can also apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the area once clean. Do not apply a bandage to the area. It should scab over in 24-48 hours. If it doesn't, or you see any green/yellow discharge, there is swelling, or there is pain, I would take Alika to a vet to make sure there isn't an infection. Good luck and kisses to Alika!

As long as there is no actual deep cut (which I cannot appreciate in the picture), you may be able to treat him at home. To speed up the healing process, you may proceed with diluted epsom salt soaks every 8 hours for 3 days. If not improving or worsening, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Make sure to dry up his pads well after soaks. Good luck and have a great day!
