Cut dog's quick, used corn starch. Is the bad smell an infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 50 lbs

I cut my dogs nails last night and she twitched so one cut down very short and hit the quick. She bled for a while & I finally read that corn starch helped so I put globs of corn starch on and wrapped it up for about 15-17 hours. I just unwrapped it and it was not bleeding any more but there was a bad smell. Is this the left over blood / corn starch or could it be infected? I had to go back to work so I left it unwrapped to get air.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. It is not likely that the nail became infected that quickly last night and it is more likely that the corn starch mixed with blood and moisture created a bad odor. I would leave the nail unwrapped. If you begin to see pus or any discharge at the site of the broken nail or any swelling of the toe, I would have Zoey examined by a veterinarian as she may need a course of an oral antibiotic. I would suggest soaking the foot in a solution of betadine and saline (so that you have a light brown solution). Soak the foot twice daily for 5-10 minutes at a time for 3-5 days and then stop.     In the picture it doesn’t look infected but I cannot say for sure without an exam. If it still smells when you get home or if she is licking it, I would have your vet take a look at it to ensure it isn’t infected and also to make sure the nail isn’t cracked elsewhere. I hope this helps!

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about Tinker Bell. My pit has done this many times! If it's not getting better, she probably needs to see your vet and have them remove the infected nail quick. When the nail breaks, the quick can become infected and painful. It's best to remove this and let the nail grow back normally. I hope that helps! My dog's nail is pulled off and the quick is exposed. What to do?
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you can remove the nail that is remaining, I would. You can cut the quick, too, if needed. If it bleeds, thickly apply something powdered, like corn starch or flour, to clot the blood. Then place a bandage over the nail for no longer than 24 hours. You MUST take the bandage off in 24 hours and do not place it tightly. If Rex is licking the area, he could cause an infection, so monitor for any swelling, discharge, or redness until the new nail grows. You can also soak the paw in an Epsom salt bath to soothe the area (make sure it is dry before applying the bandage). I cannot stress enough that he cannot wear the bandage longer than 24 hours. My dog's broken nail has discharge. Is it infected and needs vet?
It does look like there is some discharge/pus around the nail bed and I would recommend getting it rechecked by your vet, if confirmed she may require a course of antibiotics. Bathing the are in saline/salted water and drying carefully will help to freshen the area in the meantime. If she is very lame x-rays may need to be considered to rule out underlying factors behind the lost nail/swollen toe

My dog's nail quick is separated from her toe, what's the next step?
Hello. If Rosie is at all uncomfortable on the foot, constantly licking the toe, or unwilling to walk on the leg, she probably should see her veterinarian tomorrow. The toe needs to be protected, possibly with an antibiotic soaked wrap until the quick dies a bit. It will take a couple of weeks for a new nail to grow out, but if the sensitive quick can be protected, she will be much more comfortable. Yes, something like this can become easily infected. It does look a bit swollen and that can be one of the first signs of infection. I do think you should probably take her to the vet sooner if you can. In the meantime you can apply this wound spray to it a few times a day.
