My dog has a cut on her mouth. What can I put on it safely at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 22 lbs

I accidentally kicked my yorkie in the mouth as she was about to jump off the bed. Now she has a slight cut on the upper corner crease of her mouth. What can I put on it that won't harm her?

I wouldn't recommend any topical medications around the mouth. If she seems comfortable and her teeth all seem okay, it's probably okay to monitor the laceration. The mouth tends to heal quickly. If she seems painful or you start to notice yellow, green or foul smelling discharge from the wound make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Ouch poor pup! While having a vet take a look is always the best option, cleaning out the wound and keeping it dry is a good thing to do for home care. You may also want to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Maisy to prevent her from scratching at it while the wound heals. This can help prevent infection and keep irritation down.

If the wounds is very large and not closing, has loose flaps of skin, appears infected, or is bleeding without stopping, then these usually require stitches, drainage, medication, or other immediate vet care.

If the wound is small and stopped bleeding/easily cleaned at home, you can keep an eye on it and just try to keep the area clean and free of debris. Signs of infection (and that you need to see a vet ASAP) include oozing of debris from the site that is discolored, pain, heat on touch, redness, swelling, inflammation, etc.

Most mouth wounds heal up fast, but if it is still bleeding, the wound is bigger than your pinky nail, or there is facial swelling/pain, these are all signs of potential infection or a wound that is big enough that it requires treatment by your vet. Keeping any drool and debris away from the affected area is best so it can stay clean (a clean dry washcloth works great for mastiff drool!)

This sore could just be from an injury. I would gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from scratching at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I'd also have him seen by a vet if the sore doesn't appear to be healing over the next week. I will put a link below on how to make an Ecollar at home. Dog bit on lip, small hole. Should I use Neosporin or see a vet?

I would probably not use Neosporin so close to the mouth, as it can easily be licked off and since it's not made for dogs I can't tell you for sure that it's safe for them to ingest. If it's not a complete puncture you can clean it with mild soap, gauze, and warm water. Watch for pus and swelling, and do see a vet if you notice any of these as Moonshine may need antibiotics.

I do not recommend putting anything on the snout, most dogs have a very long tongue that will get to whatever you put on the snout within 5 seconds. it doesn't sounds like a serious injury, just leave it as it is , it will heal within a few days.

This looks like a fairly small, superficial abrasion so I think it would probably okay to continue to monitor it. If MK is licking the area I wouldn't recommend using Polysporin. If the wound seems to be getting larger or you notice an increase in redness, swelling or discharge you should have your vet examine it.

My dog has a jowl cut. What can I do for home care before the vet?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.

I would recommend using a mixture of betadine and saline or water so that you have a light brown solution and use this to clean the area. I would then apply a wound cream such as Sentry Wound Ointment, which you can find online or at PetCo. Monitor for worsening and if the area becomes swollen or begins to show signs of discharge, I would have Luna examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
