My dog is crying, can't eat or poop. Is it a blockage emergency?

I'm quite concerned that if Vinny has a habit of eating things he should not, if he did eat this toy, it's causing a blockage in his intestines. That would cause him to vomit, not eat, and not be able to poop. If he does have an intestinal blockage, that is a medical emergency as it is fatal without treatment. I cannot say he will be ok without seeing him in person, so the best thing for you to do is take him into a vet immediately to get checked out and have x-rays done. Please take him into a vet now. Poor Murphy! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. He may be constipated due to hard, dry stool; or, he may have some type of blockage in his colon causing him to be unable to poop. Since he is also not eating or drinking, I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today to be seen rather than attempting any kind of home remedies for this problem. The veterinarian there can do a rectal exam to help determine what the problem is, and can get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

That is bad news. If he just ate the pip you need to take him to a veterinarian right away. If indicated the vet may try to make your dog regurgitate the pip by giving your dog apomorphine (This will depend on the size of the pip) in order to avoid an intestinal blockage. Not being able to poop may have another cause, either constipation or an anal gland problem which is painful and keeps him from pooping. You need to take Jake to a vet now before the pip moves on into the intestines.

I am very concerned about Pilly, it sounds like he has a very upset stomach! My top concern would be a blockage in his intestines caused by something that he ate, like a toy, bone, sock, trash, etc. This would also prevent food from moving through his system and turning into feces. Other possibilities include bacterial or viral infection, intestinal parasites, or other internal issue. I recommend that Pilly see a vet as soon as possible. Your vet will probably recommend x-rays and maybe even blood work depending on what they discover during the physical exam.

If the vomiting continues than he could have a blockage. If he is otherwise acting ok than you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boil chicken and white rice. If the vomiting resolves, continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then gradually switch back to his regular food. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then he needs to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause. Your veterinarian can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem.

I always tell clients that if signs persist, worsen, or other signs develop after 12-24 or even 36 hours (depending on their severity), I advise a check up at their veterinarian. If the pet is acting sick then the waiting time goes down to zero, they should be seen immediately. So if Roko doesn't act sick or isn't uncomfortable, you could probably wait this out and see what happens. If he is constantly straining to have a bowel movement then of course he should be seen immediately. Vomiting and diarrhea can have many causes such as intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs are not supposed to eat), overgrooming with resultant hair ingestion, toxin ingestion, foreign body ingestion, other problems with the gastrointestinal tract, problems with organs outside of the gastrointestinal tract, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and do a thorough exam. Once those are done, a diagnostic plan and treatment plan can be discussed and implemented. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests and xrays as a starting point, called a minimum data base. If Roko isn't acting sick and straining a lot you could try some canned pumpkin with his food which is high in fiber. 1-2 teaspoons with each meal (canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling). This will increase fiber to the gut and hopefully get the gut back on track. Good luck with Roko.

Please have Rosie seen by a vet right away, as this is an emergency. It sounds like the bone has caused a blockage, which is extremely painful, and it could lead to perforation of the intestines, which can be deadly. Your vet will need to evaluate Rosie and may recommend surgery to help reduce the risk of perforation. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!
