My dog cries at night after a crate injury. How do I fix this?

If it's only happened once, I wouldn't be too concerned as it may just be something startled Moose that evening. If the behavior continues, then looking for triggers such as strange noises, people, animals, sounds, etc may alert you as to why he is becoming agitated at night. Moving the crate to a quieter place may help. If he starts showing signs of illness, or remains agitated all the time, then scheduling a vet visit to rule out any health issues is smart.

If you have something from the "old" place, put it in the crate. that may provide some comfort. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety associated with the move. Keep a small nightlight on for them until they acclimate.

Poor, Luna, the crate bit her! When you are home, continue to encourage her to be comfortable with the crate. You can try switching out bedding or blankets inside, place it in a different area of the house, or place blankets over it to give it a different feel. When you are home, throw treats inside without shutting the door. Play with toys in and around the crate. Feed her inside the crate. Give her some time before locking her in there again, and I am sure she will come around.

Perhaps (and without being there, I can't tell for sure) Loki keeps crying because he gets your attention. You do not need to stay with him, nor does he need something to keep him occupied at night. He needs to learn that nighttime is for sleeping. Once you are sure that all of his needs have been attended to, put him in his crate and walk away . . . and stay away! Do not go back, yell, try to soothe, etc. Once he realizes that his noise won't get the desired result, he'll stop. However, he may get worse temporarily. This does not mean that the tactic isn't working. On the contrary, it means that what he was doing before no longer gets the desired result, so he's ramping up the behavior in the hopes that more will be better. Stand your ground! He will eventually learn for himself that nothing is going to work, so he may as well go to sleep.

I would recommend feeding her dinner in her crate and making this a place where she wants to go and is comfortable for her. I would make sure she has plenty of room to move around in as well. You can try using the Adaptil products to see if this calms her down and relaxes her. It can take some time for a dog to become crate trained but the key is to make it an enjoyable place that she wants to be in. If she associates the crate with food and a place where she sleeps, she will hopefully find the crate less stressful. I hope this helps! I'm sorry Luna is having trouble crate training. I would try to make it as pleasant an experience as possible, such as rewarding her for going in the crate and sitting quietly. You can also put her in there during times you aren't actually leaving, and then reward her when you come back and let her out so that she knows you will always return. It may also just take some time and her getting older to be more comfortable by herself. Good luck!

Poor Koko! The most common reason that puppies tend to cry at night, is when they are separated from their families - this often happens if they are crated in a different part of the house at night. Dogs are very social animals, and young puppies in particular would normally never be alone when they are sleeping - so they will often bark and cry if they are separated from you. I would recommend having Koko sleep in a comfy dog crate, right beside your bed. If needed, you can even place the crate on a low table or chair so that she is at eye-level with you - this way, she is in her own separate space but she can hear you and smell you beside her. This is also a good arrangement because it allows you to hear her if she cries to go out during the night - many puppies this age can't "hold it" for more than a few hours at a time, so nighttime potty trips are often needed for a while. Once she is older and sleeping through the night with no problem, you can gradually start to move the crate further away from the bed, or even eventually into another room if you prefer.
