My dog is coughing and whining after surgery, what could be the cause?

A mild post intubation cough can sometimes be present for a day or 2 from irritation but it should resolve quickly. If the cough is persistent and especially if the cough is productive, moist, or accompanied by nasal discharge, decreased appetite, or lethargy than this would be more concerning. With recent anesthesia we would then consider aspiration pneumonia and heart failure as possibilites. The easiest thing to do is to have a recheck for chest xrays to rule out something more serious. IT is a possibility, although usually there is no long term effect and the symptoms seems to disappear within a few days to a few weeks. if it happens just with food and doesn't seem to bother him otherwise, i would not worry too much about it at the moment.

It depends on how long ago the surgery was. Typically a cough just after anesthesia can be associated with irritation to the trachea from the tracheal tube. Coughing several days after could be associated with aspiration pneumonia, or an upper respiratory virus. Also other causes such as heartworm disease, parasites, and asthma can also cause cough. Congratulations on your new addition! When a dog is spayed, we put a tube down their throat to help them breathe under anesthesia which can sometimes cause irritation. That might be responsible for the mild snoring. But usually a cough that is associated with that tube will start right away (not 5 days later). You didn't mention where Juniper came from, but if she was recently adopted from a shelter, she certainly could have developed an upper respiratory infection from the shelter. Often these upper respiratory infections are viral, but they can develop secondary bacterial infections as well. If Juniper seems lethargic (more tired than normal), is developing discharge from her nose, does not want to eat, or her cough is getting worse, then I would definitely recommend having your veterinarian examine her. Give him plenty of water, and try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity may help to soothe his throat. I don't think you need to take him back into a vet now, I'd just keep an eye on him. I hope this helps!

Oh no, poor Ice! I'm sorry he's sick. This vomiting could be due to his respiratory infection if he's coughing a lot. I would have him seen by a vet for his symptoms. He may benefit from medications from the vet for his symptoms. If he's congested, you can put him in a room with a humidifier or take him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam from either may help temporarily with his congestion.

It sounds like Hettie could have a respiratory infection and may be congested. Tonight, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. I would bring her into the vet in morning for an exam. If she does have a respiratory infection, she may benefit from antibiotics.
