My dog coughing and gagging after vet visit, is it throat irritation?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A honking sounding cough with some gagging is a very typical sign of a condition called collapsing trachea. This is condition of the airway where it collapses down when they try to breath. This would be unrelated to the rake incident, but the rake incident might have stressed Gizmo to the point of an attack or episode where this collapsing trachea has become evident. It usually only flares up when they are stressed or breathing heavy. Another possible cause is kennel cough, once again unrelated to the rake incident but the stress could have caused a flare-up. This causes a hacking cough that is persistent. The other option is that the CPR episode caused trauma or inflammation to the airway or neck. Either way, the best thing to do would be to have a check up with a vet to see if some of these other underlying diseases are present, so you can treat (in terms of kennel cough or irritation of the trachea), or prevent future episodes (in terms of kennel cough). If the coughing has improved, the best thing to do in the mean-time would be to keep Gizmo quiet, comfortable, and rested, and avoid any activities where he would get excited or stressed. If he is still having trouble breathing please go to a vet right away as these episodes can spiral quickly and end up with a blocked airway all together, which can be fatal. Yes, he probably has a mild upper respiratory infection or cold. That can cause a sore throat and change in their bark. This usually is a viral infection that will run its course in a few days to a week. Please let him rest and try to limit the excitement and reduce any barking. This cannot be treated at home without knowing what is going on. I recommend that you have Milo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It's pretty rare that dogs actually get something stuck in the back of the throat. More likely her throat is irritated, or she has an infection like kennel cough. If the cough continues I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian: while it's difficult to see the very back of a dog's throat without sedation, your vet can help determine what is causing the cough.

Poor Jet! If you have been creating a large amount of dust and debris in your decorating, it is possible that Jet is experiencing some airway irritation. However, if he has been exposed to any dogs (on walks, dog parks, groomer, etc.) over the past week, there is also a chance that he has contracted kennel cough or canine influenza. If the cough continues or worsens, he should see his vet.

You can try offering him some wet dog food formed into a meatball to see if this helps push anything in his throat along. If the gagging continues or you are ever worried about how well Biko is breathing, I recommend having Biko seen by a veterinarian for an exam.
