Why is my dog coughing, shaking, gagging, and has nasal discharge?

Coughing can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral/bacterial infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

I'm sorry to hear Charlie isn't feeling well. It sounds like he has an upper respiratory infection. This is common for puppies that fly. They don't have a strong immune system and the stress of flying makes them susceptible to everything. I would also be concerned for parvovirus as that is also very contagious. I would take him to a vet right away to diagnose him and get him started on medications. Because he is young he can get worse very quickly. Good luck and kisses to Charlie!

Poor guy. It sounds like at the very least Ziggy has an upper airway infection. I would recommend taking him to your vet to get him examined today if possible. If he does have an infection, then a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet generally is enough to resolve the issue. Poor Charlie. There are a lot of different causes for coughing. He could have a severe upper respiratory infection/kennel cough, heart disease or even pneumonia. The yelping when being picked up is likely unrelated but could be due to him hurting somewhere in his back or abdomen. Both of these problems call for an exam by your vet in order to listen to his heart and lungs and also palpating his back, abdomen and other joints to find out why exactly he is helping. I would try to video the cough to help the vet make a proper diagnosis. Your vet will be able to take X-rays if needed and also get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. They will also be able to prescribe something for the cough to help everyone rest a little better at night. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon !

Hi there. While it is not abnormal for Charlie to be lethargic and behave differently when everyone leaves-this is a bit much. I would recommend taking him in to your veterinarian in case something else is going on. Pancreatitis, intoxication, and a few other diseases can start with this presentation. Shivering in dogs is often a pain response (can also be nervousness, cold, etc). If these behaviors continue I recommend taking him in as soon as you can to try to prevent it from getting worse. Based on the symptoms you are describing, it sounds as if Charlie is dealing with a severe respiratory disease / infection. I would strongly recommend getting Charlie in to the emergency veterinarian as soon as possible as this could potentially become fatal if not appropriately treated. The sooner he is seen the better. You can try and place him in the bathroom with the hot shower running so that he is breathing in steam and using a humidifier in the meantime while you are waiting to get to an emergency vet. I’m sorry to hear that Charlie isn’t feeling well! Chronic vomiting is a cause for concern as it may be caused by toxin ingestion, kidney or liver disease, a foreign body, intestinal parasites, and even certain cancers. Charlie’s increased salivation is a very common sign of nausea. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on. Your vet may perform some blood work and take x-rays to get an accurate diagnosis. I hope this helps and that all is well with Charlie!
