Why is my dog constipated with a hard belly, arched back, and clingy?

Pet's info: Dog | Morkie | Female | spayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 8.3 lbs

My 6 1/2 year old female Morkie seems to be constipated. Her belly is hard, her back is arched, and her tail is tucked. Her back arched and tail tucked has always been our indication to take her out. She went somewhat normal yester. 2 weeks ago I took her to her Dr due to her not going. He expressed her anal glands and the next day she was going as normal. I gave her about a tablespoon of pumpkin purée about 20 minutes ago. I’m a little worried because she’s clingy more than normal. Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Custard. If she does not defecate by morning, the. She needs to see her veterinarian again. She may be constipated, but she could also be experiencing another problem such as back pain. If so, this requires different treatment. In the meantime, keep her quiet. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can add about 1 tablespoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which may help with constipation. If that does not help, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can at that point check on that and recommend therapy accordingly. It sounds like she may be constipated - but if she's so severely constipated that she's crying and vomiting, this is a serious problem that needs immediate veterinary care, not something that can be treated at home. I would recommend taking her to the vet right away for an exam. He/she can palpate her abdomen and take x-rays if needed to help determine why she can't poop, and get her started on appropriate treatment. For severe constipation, this may mean giving her a manual enema under sedation to remove the impacted feces.

Usually with constipation they will try to go to the bathroom but nothing will come out - and they are straining (pushing hard). it doesn't sound like the issue to me. It is more likely that she got injured somehow while you were gone like jumping down off the couch or something similar. They will often do this and get a sore back. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam - if she did injure her back the vet can give you some medication to help her feel better.

If she is otherwise acting normal, then I would not be too concerned. It's possible that she simply has some firm feces and constipation with what you're describing. Poor Betty! The constipation may b the cause of her discomfort or may be a symptom of another condition which is slowing down her bowel or causing dehydration. I recommend a full check p by your vet, they may wish to do an abdominal xray or ultrasound to identify any underlying factors and give an enema if appropriate alongside oral laxatives as long as no obstruction is identified

Please take Precious to the vet right away. It sounds like she is in pain based on your description, and it's important that she be seen to figure out why and to get her treated.
