My dog choked, now has a red eye and nosebleed. Is this normal?

Hi there. Yes, pressure / strangulation at the neck can absolutely cause ruptured blood vessels and sclera hemorrhage. I would visit with the instructor about other methods of training or visit with your husband about the amount of force used. She is a very small dog and he might not realize how strong he is or how much force he can accidentally apply. I hope this was helpful. Take care !

The nose bleed is worrying indeed, but it could be related to the same trauma. if he is otherwise absolutely fine you can wait and see, monitor him closely and make sure he doesn't become lethargic. if he isn't' himself at all- take him to the ER.

Strangulation injuries can be severe and have long lasting effects. This is especially true with lung damage as it can show up after the incident. She likely has broken vessels in the tissues lining her eyes due to the trauma. She may require eye medications to help them heal. I hope this information helps!

Yikes! I'm so glad you were there to stop this from becoming a much worse situation! His mouth should heal just fine. Offer some soft food as hard food may be a bit painful for the next couple of days, other than that you don't need to change anything. If it hasn't healed well within 4-5 days, take him to the vet. Keep an eye on the other dog as well; while you were able to get them untangled quickly when he was choking, sometimes dogs can develop whats called "non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema" after a choking incident, even a brief one. If he starts to cough, seems to be breathing faster than normally or is labored at all in his breathing, take him to the vet. Oxygen therapy may be needed, these guys usually recover but they do often need to spend some time in an oxygen cage. He very well may be fine and not develop these symptoms at all, but it is something you need to watch out for over the next 12-24 hours. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree with your veterinarian. Sometimes bleeding can be noticed from the nostril in the same side as the removed eye. The reason is that there is some connection in between both structures through the nasolacrimal duct. This should improve within days of surgery. Good luck and have a great day!

You should certainly discuss this with your groomer, but I have seen this injury after grooming when a noose is used to stabilize the dog on the table, and either the dog struggles or the noose is too tight, causing the whites of the eyes to become severely blood shot. If the pressure around the neck is too tight, dogs can even experience symptoms of strangulation, including fluid in the lungs.

I would be concerned if she develops difficulty breathing which could happen if the bleeding gets worse and she develops swelling of the airway, Based on the history and appearance of the pharynx, I would be worried that Luca may have a piece of the stick lodged behind the tissues. You need to discuss x-rays and or CT or surgery to explore the area. In summary, the safest thing to do is monitor for respiratory difficulty and take her to if the nearest veterinary emergency hospital if that happens. Otherwise, follow up with your veterinarian first thing tomorrow.
