My puppy's chin bump opened into a sore. Should I see a vet?

Congratulations on your new pet! I can see the small pink, raised lump on Cora's chin. This can be caused by a localized skin infection or a small growth. I recommend keeping a close eye on it, and keeping the area clean. You can get Cora an E-collar or "cone" if she is scratching the area. If the area grows in size, Cora appears bothered by it, or it begins to have discharge or bleeding, Cora should be seen by a vet. You can apply a small amount of neosporin a few times a day after cleaning the area. I hope this helps and that all is well!

There are several types of lumps we can see in young dogs. Certainly a histiocytoma is possible but other growths or even infection in a skin gland or hair follicle could also look similar and bleed. I recommend cleaning the lump with a gentle antiseptic cleaner and if it is still bleeding or getting larger in the next 24 hours, have your veterinarian evaluate it. Howl may need a minor type of test called a fine needle aspirate to help determine what type of cells are involved.

This may be an abscesses, cysts or tumors. You should have them examined by your veterinarian. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

That heavy discharge generally indicates infection. Your pup will heal the fastest if he goes in to see his doctor. The doctor may give him a systemic antibiotic or may only give him topicals if the lesion is very small. Sometimes these pets can be itchy as well and will get medication for that too. You definitely want to make sure that he cannot itch or lick at that area as it will make it worse. The doctor will also shave the hair as it needs to be exposed to the air to dry up. This does look like a little pimple, bite or abscess, You can put a warm compress with epsom salt on it several times a day for a few minutes. If it is a little abscess or pimple it will open up and empty by itself. Neosporin likely will not be helpful as it is not an open wound. If the mass gets bigger and starts to hurt Oliver, or if it looks very angry, take him to your vet who will likely lance it, if necessary.

Puppies!!! This sore could be several things - urine scald and another puppy suckling this spot are likely. Watch the puppies closely to see if another pup is suckling or if mom is excessively licking this spot. I wouldn't rush him to the vet just yet. Just monitor the area for the next few days to a week. It should go away on its own if it is just a bug bite or minor skin reaction. If it gets worse or doesn't resolve then its best to have it looked at after the wait and see period is over, especially if Beaux is not bothered by it.
