My dog has a chest infection. Should I stop or switch antibiotics?

Vomiting can be caused by many different conditions including gastritis (upset stomach from eating something like garbage, raw food, bones, or dead animals in the park, etc.), pancreatitis, obstructions in the gut, as well as kidney/liver/metabolic diseases. Very often amoxicillin will do nothing to help the vomiting, and can make it worse as antiboitics are hard on the guts. I recommend feeding a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals (4-6 meals a day of 1/2 cup size meals). If the vomiting continues, or if Mui is lethargic or weak, then I would see a vet right away. If the vomiting stops and she is eating and acting normally then she is likely OK. I would not give any amoxicillin. Best of luck with Mui.

I would assume if Danny has something infectious like a bacterial or viral pneumonia he would have improved with antibiotics or the virus would have ran it's course. The only advice in retrospect would have been to not stop the antibiotic until the cough had resolved for at least a week or 2. Some pneumonia's require 4-8 weeks of antibiotics. He definitely could have something else going on in his lungs like heart worm, heart disease, tracheal disease, a hernia, fungal pneumonia (they are very sick), cancer or allergic airway disease. If you are able try to get Danny to a vet for an exam, heart worm test and chest X-rays. I wish you the best!

Yes, it is safe to give those medications together - and both are necessary if she has a bacterial cause of her cough in addition to a giardia infection. Medication is dosed according to weight, so the amount of medication she is receiving should be appropriate for her size. Hope this helps!

Augmentine is an antibiotic, it treats bacterial infections. Terbinafine is an antifungal that treats fungal infections. If your vet suspects both then Augmentine is also necessary. the most common side effects are vomiting, lack of appetite and diarrhea.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Augmentin or Clavamox are typically effective for skin infections, but Cephalexin is generally more commonly used. Common ophthalmic antibiotics often include Neomycin or Orbifloxacin. I hope this is helpful!

That is not too long to be on an antibiotic as sometimes we prescribe longer courses. If he is getting sick on the antibiotic I would discontinue using it and contact your vet as soon as you can so that you can put spyke on a different antibiotic that won't cause a sensitive stomach. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While antibiotics can cause vomiting and nausea, a cough can definitely be due to aspiration pneumonia. However, other conditions unrelated to possible aspiration such as heart disease, infectious pneumonia, or heart worm infection can cause coughing as well and may just be a coincidence. If you are concerned about Chester’s cough, I recommend having him seen by his vet to rule out the conditions above.
