Can my older dog produce milk if my 5-week puppy nurses? Is it safe?

It's not unheard of for dogs to nurse kittens, and there is nothing wrong with it. That being said, if the kittens are older than six weeks of age, then yes I would stop them from suckling. At this age, they are old enough to be eating a kitten formulated food, and do not need to be nursing. At that age, it will be supplementary, and they don't need it.

It is not dangerous for the puppies to drink another dog's milk, however the teats will only produce so much milk as is in demand. It is quite normal for several bitches in a pack to feed the puppies. as long as the puppies thrive and grow and gain weight this should not be a problem.

16 week old kittens should be weaned and not nursing, and it is unlikely your female dog is actually lactating. Kittens can knead and look as if they are nursing as a sort of comfort behavior, so that may be what you are seeing instead. If she is off form, has any fever or her milk glands are red, hot or painful to firm touch then she will need prescription treatment from a vet. If everything is otherwise good, just monitor for any changes. 48 hours of very light food if she is healthy and not underweight can discourage active milk production but do not starve her

It is normal for the mom to lose some weight during lactation, but if you are seeing ribs, then she is not eating enough calories. The best way to ensure she is getting all the necessary nutrients is to feed a formulated dog food; one that is made for lactating dogs is best. You can start weaning the pups from their mom now. Once the puppies stop nursing, the milk production will stop and the mammary gland will slowly decrease in size. The fact that all the puppies died might indicate the mother is not in good health, I would recommend taking her to the vet nd get her checked, I would also recommend having her spayed in a couple months from now.

They are too young to be weaned from milk, you will need to buy puppy replacer milk at the pet shop. there could be many reasons for the mother to stop feeding her pups, the most common would be mammary gland inflammation.
