My dog is bleeding from her rectum, but there's no blood in her stool. What's happening?

She may have an infected anal sac or the mucous membrane of the rectum may be injured or she may have a rectal tumor. If the bleeding does not stop you will need to take her to a veterinarian or pet ER for an exam.

Your dog's anal sacs could have become impacted and then ruptured, causing the blood. It could also be caused by trauma to the rectum from a foreign body, or from an intestinal tumor. I recommend getting her to your vet as soon as possible. If it is a rupture of the anal sacs, she will need antibiotics and the sacs will have to be flushed and cleaned. If your vet is concerned about a foreign body or a tumor, they will take x-rays.

Hello. It is possible that Grace had an infection in one of her anal glands, & now that it has ruptured, she actually has relief & feels better. If you can have her evaluated, she might benefit from antibiotics, other wise pick up a skin/wound cleanser at your pharmacy and clean the area around her bum several times a day. Hopefully, she will do just fine & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That sounds like a severe anal gland infection, both the bleeding and dragging of the butt are common symptoms of this condition. you will need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated, it usually requires a long course of antibiotics to get rid of this condition.

Hi. Poor Julie. This is concerning for sure. With blood from that area, it could be from her anal glands, her colon, or her rectum. Without an exam it is too hard to say. This is something that shouldn't wait for the pets own comfort. Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do at home in this situation. I recommend going to the ER as the best thing for Julie

If the treatment your vet prescribed is not working Jaz may need surgery to remove the polyp. Some vets feel comfortable performing this surgery while others may refer you to a specialist for surgery or endoscopy. I would recommend speaking with your vet about a possible referral to have the polyp removed.

Poor Roscoe! It's not normal to bleed from the anus after bowel movements, and the thing you see sticking out of his anus could be a tumor, impacted and infected anal sac, or his rectum could be prolapsed. Roscoe could see a vet right away for this, and I would bring him into a vet ASAP to be examined so this can be treated.

Poor Jameson! Bleeding like this could be due to an internal injury, problems with the rectum or anus, parasites in the stool, or irritation/inflammation of the lower GI tract. If his bleeding is not stopping, or has been ongoing a while, it is best to schedule a vet visit to check for these issues and get started on treatment.

My dog has bright red blood on her bum and stool. Is it anal cancer?

It is not possible to assess your dog's anus via the internet and I strongly recommend you take Lady to a veterinarian for an exam. She may have an abscessed anal sac/gland or actually may have a rectal polyp or an injury. It is also possible that the blood is not coming from the anus, but from the vulva and then there is a possibility of your dog suffering from a UTI. Best take her to a vet in the morning.

Why is my dog's anus bleeding? No vet nearby, what can I do?

Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.

My dog is bleeding from its butt and breathing weirdly. Is it serious?

Bleeding from the rear end and heavy breathing can be a sign of potential poisoning that has led to a bleeding disorder. Or if your pet has not been vaccinated for parvovirus then there is a potential she could have parvo and the abnormal breathing is due to pain. Either condition warrants a veterinary visit asap to best diagnose your pet properly so that treatment can be stopped right away and hopefully you don't have to deal with a terrible tragedy involving your pet if this is dealt with quickly and efficiently.
