Why is my dog bleeding from his anus after pooping and a lump shows?

The constipation may be the result of an anal sac infection or rectal tumor. It sounds like Roscoe is in pain also. Please take him in for an exam and an enema to relieve the constipation and they can also check his anal glands and do a rectal palpation to check for a mass. Roscoe may need pain medication and antibiotics if they find an infection. They can then discuss his diet and whether he needs additional fiber added to his diet. I like to add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding for added fiber. This does sound like a painful and possibly serious problem so please take Roscoe in soon. Your dog may have an injury in his anus or rectum, or a polyp or he may have an impacted anal gland. I strongly recommend you take him to your veterinarian as an impacted or infected anal gland is very painful and needs to be evacuated, or lanced and flushed. She may have an infected anal sac or the mucous membrane of the rectum may be injured or she may have a rectal tumor. If the bleeding does not stop you will need to take her to a veterinarian or pet ER for an exam.

It sounds like your dog has a rectal polyp. This fleshy bit of tissue is likely what is causing the blood you are seeing in the stool. If the treatment your vet prescribed is not working Jaz may need surgery to remove the polyp. Some vets feel comfortable performing this surgery while others may refer you to a specialist for surgery or endoscopy. I would recommend speaking with your vet about a possible referral to have the polyp removed.

It is hard to tell for sure by the pictures, but my suspicion would be that it is either a perianal tumor that has bled, or potentially a ruptured anal sac abscess. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If it is an abscess then antibiotics will likely be needed. If it is a tumor then the veterinarian can discuss options with you. Often perianal tumors are benign. If you see prolapsed tissue that disappears right away after the bm, I wouldn't worry about it because there is nothing you can do to fix it. I would be a little suspicious that there may actually be a small rectal mass or polyp that is causing the protrusion of tissue and rectal bleeding. I have seen this before. If not, and it's really just irritated rectal tissue, he may benefit from a stool softener and a higher fiber diet. With Zach's situation I think as long as he is happy and doing well otherwise, and has a good quality of life, he is doing quite well. What a great owner you are--I'm impressed!

Poor Jameson! Bleeding like this could be due to an internal injury, problems with the rectum or anus, parasites in the stool, or irritation/inflammation of the lower GI tract. If his bleeding is not stopping, or has been ongoing a while, it is best to schedule a vet visit to check for these issues and get started on treatment.
