My dog got a burn from a hot wood pellet. Does she need a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 16 lbs

my dog got a burn on her back from a hot wood pellet from an outdoor pizza oven, unbeknownst to us for about 15 min. She never cried but was trying to get our attention by following us closely while we were in and out of the house last night. I cleaned it and put silvadene on it. Is there anything I should be doing? Should I take her to my vet?

Poor Uma! I'm sorry to hear she got burned. Depending on how large and deep the burn is, she may need further treatment. Often we need to shave the area and treat these injuries with topical medication as well as oral antibiotics. Regardless, I would recommend taking her in to see your vet to get some anti-inflammatory pain medication as she is likely painful from this injury.

Ouch, poor Uma! You did the right thing by cleaning it and applying silvadene. Burns can become infected fairly easily, so I do recommend taking her to your vet for further evaluation because antibiotics, pain medications and additional wound treatments may be needed. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

Poor Uma! I would recommend that she be seen at your vet. They can examine the area carefully and determine what is needed. Burns can easily become infected and often require intensive treatment to aid the healing process. She may need antibiotics, and continues topical treatments (may include ointment as you have already used, if the wound is significant sometimes surgical removal of the damaged tissue is needed followed by regular bandage changes). I hope Uma feels better soon!

Hi and thank you for the question. I do think this area looks infected. She probably suffered from a superficial minor burn. These, too can get infected. Until you can get to the vet, clean the area with a mild soap, dry thoroughly and apply a topical antibiotic. A cream type is best, but ointment would be phat as a second choice. She may need a prescription antibiotic and your vet can tell you that during the exam.

My dog got a hot wax burn. How should I treat his fur and skin?

Ouch! Poor Rocky! Burns are really high risk to get infected and are usually very painful. If possible, I would have your vet look at it so they can properly clean the wound and get him started on antibiotics and pain meds and topical treatment to have the fastest recovery. If you are unable to take him to the vet, you can try to gently clean it will a mild soap and water. I would also make sure he doesn’t lick it. You can put a Cone collar on him to prevent this. You can put neosporin OINTMENT on it twice a day to help it heal. I would also confine him so he doesn’t get the area dirty. This method may not work so watch the wound closely. If at any point there is pus from the wound or he stops eating or becomes lethargic, I would strongly urge him to see a vet as the infection could go systemic without oral antibiotics. Gorda really needs to see a vet - she could be in significant pain and if the burns are serious they could become life threatening. You could look into Care Credit which might help, or you could contact your local animal shelter to see if there are any grants or subsidized veterinary care in your area. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything at home - it could make the wounds worse.

Poor girl and poor you, what a scary experience. I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic ASAP for evaluation and monitoring. If that's not possible, give her a slightly cool to lukewarm bath to try to draw more of the heat out, without cooler her down. Watch her carefully for changes in behavior or her skin over the next few days because injuries are not always obvious right away.

My dog has a burn with discharge. Do I need shot records for the vet?

Oh my. Your lack of his shot records shouldn't be a reason why Jackson can't be seen. Really the only vaccine that is required for a pet to get treatment is the Rabies, so the vet will likely just give that 1 vaccine if you have no proof that he is up to date. Then the vet will proceed with getting this burn treated properly. He will need burn cream (i.e. silver sulfadiazene) and oral antibiotics only available through your vet, to get this to heal. Burns do take a bit to heal, so persistence and regular check ups with your vet will likely be needed. So getting him seen rigth away is encouraged.
