My dog has bumps on her face. Is it an allergy or insect bite?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Whatever she was exposed to needs to be identified so she does not have a reaction like this again. Best of luck!

If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!

If these bumps appears on Bella recently in the last few hours, then these could be hives, insect sting or bite, or a mild skin irritation. It is hard to say for sure without seeing Bella in person. If they are very itchy and persist or seem to really bother her, I would seek care for Bella with her veterinarian soon to have these evaluated.

Hello. Vegas is having a pretty significant allergic reaction to something. It could be something she ate, touched, inhaled, or was bitten or stung by. The hives will probably go down on their own, but the discoloration in her groin is the result of Vegas licking & chewing her skin. This will probably not just go away by itself, & may get worse. This is not a life-threatening situation & there are many things that can be done to help her. Until you can have Vegas seen by your veterinarian, you can bathe her in a mild oatmeal based shampoo using cool water. You can start her on a fish oil supplement & at her weight, you can give her 1000-1200 mg twice a day. Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jamo! It sounds like Jamo is having an allergic reaction and the raised red bumps are hives. Another possibility is a skin infection. Hives could be from an insect bite, a reaction to something she ate or an environmental allergen. Boxers tend to be a sensitive breed! Ideally I recommend that you bring her to your Vet to have her looked at, I understand your financial dilemma. They will know best the difference between an infection and hives. An infection requires antibiotics while hives from an allergic reaction require steroids and an antihistamine. You could try 2 tablets of 25mg generic benadryl every 8 hours. Just make sure there are no other drugs or decongestants in the benadryl. I wish you the best of luck

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those bumps do not look like a bug bite reaction as but bite reactions are usually haired swellings in the skin. I would be worried that these are an infection or masses of a different type (benign (non-cancerous) masses or more concerningly a cancerous mass). If they popped up quickly then they are more likely infection. I would recommend not giving Benedryl, putting an e-collar on Kelso so that he can't scratch them open, and get him to a vet as soon as possible for testing and medications. Best of luck with Kelso.
