My dachshund has a bump that won't go away. Is it serious or not?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

About two weeks ago this bump popped up on my 9 year old mini dachshund. She has severe outdoor allergies and gets rashes and welts all the time that go away pretty quickly. This one isnt going away. ive checked and it’s not fatty or filled with pus or liquid. I just lost my job and am broke but love my baby so need to know if this is serious or not before spending money I don’t have at the vet.

It doesn't appear to be serious, but unfortunately it's not possible to tell from just the picture. I would have to take a sample of it and look under the microscope to tell for sure.

However, this bump looks more related to inflammation rather than something serious like skin cancer. This could simply be a boil.

One thing that would help determine whether the bump is harmful or not is the amount of time it's been there. If it has been there for over a month and is growing, then I would be more suspicious of a tumor or cyst. If it has only been there a week or two, then I would give it some more time.

For now, you can safely do some treatment at home in hopes of taking down the swelling. Make a salt water solution by adding a tsp. of salt to 2 cups of warm water. Soak a cloth in the water, then hold this over the bump for 15 minutes, while intermittently dipping the cloth in the warm water. Do this 3-4 times daily.

If just one of these is present and it isn't causing any discomfort, then I would suggest monitoring the area to see if it resolves on its own. Dog has a growing skin bump. Is it serious if I can't afford a vet?

Hi there. Unfortunately there are many different kinds of skin tumors/growths that dogs and get and it can be hard to tell what they are just by looking at them. I think it looks like a benign papilloma wart but you must understand that there is no way I can tell you that for sure. It could certainly be a life-threatening cancer. There is just no way to tell from a photo. I don't think it is an emergency but when you can get the funds together I suggest you have that checked out by your local vet especially if it continues to change (size, shape, etc). The growth does look irritated like he either scratched it or is biting at it. If that is the case you need to get him an E-collar (cone) to wear so he stops messing with it. If he continues to traumatize it then it may get infected. If he is not messing with it then I suggest you just leave it alone (no treatment) for now and just watch it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Why is my senior dachshund's belly lump bleeding? Is it serious?

This looks like a skin mass or tumor, but it is difficult to know exactly what it might be without being able to examine it in person. I would recommend having your vet take a look. They might recommend taking a sample using a small needle, or they might recommend surgery to remove the growth, especially since it is bleeding. In your picture the blood looks like it is near Snoopy's prepuce - if Snoopy is bleeding from his penis or prepuce I would recommend seeing a veterinarian on an emergency basis.

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. That does look to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells and can be benign (inflammation, cyst, some tumors) or a malignant tumor. Given the age of your dog this may be a histiocytoma, but as many skin tumors can look alike the best plan to confirm this is for your vet to perform a needle aspirate for cytology. What is this new bump on my dog after grooming? Is it serious?

This may be a pimple (little abscess), cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian as tumors should be removed ASAP. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. Your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning. Since this is obviously bothering your dog (it looks like Bentley is licking it), I would have this examined very soon.
