My dachshund has a bleeding, pus-filled bump on her nose. What is it?

Hi, on my 2 1/2 year old dachshund we noticed a bump on her nose. Wondering what this might be? It started bleeding a little and had some pus after a day.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an abscess. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has a red, pus-filled bump near his nostril. What's wrong?

I recommend that you have Arlo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. My dog has a growing, red, bleeding bump on her nose. What is it?

This looks like she had an infected area under the skin (an abscess) that has ruptured to the surface. That is good as the infection will drain. Clean the area with antibacterial soap, rinse well and you can apply a thin film of antibiotic ointment. It should heal in a few days. My dog has a sudden bleeding pink bump on its nose. What is it?

Hello there! This is most likely a benign lump called a histiocytoma, which is a common condition that shows up on the face and paws in young dogs. This can only be confirmed by a veterinarian, by considering the size, shape, location, and the age of your dog, it's the most likely cause. I recommend a visit to your vet so that they may offer a definitive diagnosis. They will give Nikki a full exam, and most likely they will obtain a small sample of the cells inside the mass with a small needle. This is called a fine needle aspirate, or FNA. These cells will be examined under a microscope so that the vet can rule out other, more dangerous tumors. Histiocytomas most often spontaneously resolve on their own, but it can take weeks or months to go away completely. Some owners prefer to have them surgically removed, which is usually curative. If Nikki starts scratching at the lump, or if it becomes irritated or starts oozing, a visit to the vet is definitely in order as it could cause an infection. My dog has a growing, bloody lump on his nose. What could it be?

Hi there! It does look like Fynn does have a small nodule/mass. This could be a benign growth such as a focal infection site or a malignant growth like a mast cell tumor. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Fynn evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!
