My dog had a C-section. Will her next birth be difficult again?

Hi so my dog once gave birth to puppies (not planned) but something went wrong and she lost 1 puppy and the vets thought the 2nd Puppy was dead but it turned out he was alive when they did c-section. I was wondering If she gave birth again what are the chances of that happening because my friends dog came over and she is looking a little fat so my question is: do you think her birthing with go wrong again or is she most likely safe thankyou!!

Once they have an issue giving birth (dystocia) and they have had a C-section they will usually continue to have problems. If I were your vet I would have spayed her at the time of surgery. Sorry to say this but if you play the odds she will most likely need to have another C-section. Every C-section causes scarring/adhesions of the uterine lining making it difficult for the placenta(s) of the future puppies to attach. If you are serious about breeding her only use a male that is smaller than she is to reduce the size of the puppies - that may help with the birthing process but will not help the attachment of the placentas. And, be prepared for another C-section.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Achoos. Unfortunately, if the puppies are too large for her to safely deliver, then a C-section will be necessary again. She can have x-rays prior to delivery to determine if the puppies can fit through pelvis. There not medications that can be given safely during pregnancy to change the size of the puppies. You may consider spaying her in the future if she continues to have difficulties during labor and delivery. I hope this information helps!

Can a female dog get pregnant and have puppies after a C-section?

Yes she can. Especially if she was not spayed during her c-section. You have to ask the veterinarian who did her surgery to determine if she still has her reproductive organs or not. I will say this however. Most vets will go ahead and remove the uterus and ovaries (reproductive organs) during a c-section because it is an easier and less risky surgery than leaving everything inside.

It is best to work with your vet for regular checkups to confirm the pregnancy, and an X-ray as it gets closer to Riley's due-date to check on the size and number of puppies. Your vet can then recommend if a C-section is needed. Signs to watch out for during labor that may indicate dystocia (difficulty giving birth) include straining for long periods without success, a visible puppy stuck in the birth canal, or no puppies produced after several hours of labor. These are all signs something may be wrong and that Riley should be brought to the vet for care.

You can help the puppies try to latch to make sure they are getting milk. If they are not good at latching, you may have to supplement them with puppy formula using a bottle. I do not recommend breeding Bella again if she had a c section, it would be best to have her spayed. Best of luck.

Clues that would help determine if she may need a c-section include previous episodes of needing a c-section, being overweight, and having an abnormal external genitalia conformation. You could consult with a veterinary theriogenologist for a pre-breeding exam to determine if there are any abnormalities within her external genitalia or her overall health which would predispose her to complications with labor.
