My senior dog's nose is swollen. Antibiotics aren't helping. What's next?

This is very important as I am afraid this could either be a nasal cancer or possibly a severe nasal fungal infection. A CT scan helps to distinguish these conditions and a biopsy will help confirm it. Rhinoscopy is needed in some cases to better visualize the nasal cavity after the CT scan is done. Judging from the pictures, I would be suspicious that this is an abscess / infection or a nasal / sinus tumor. If this is a tumor, it may have developed a secondary infection, which is why it likely responded to the previous treatment. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you on what this is other than it would need further testing such as rhinoscopy or CT scan to help determine what this could be. If you are unable to do further testing, I would consider continuing the antibiotics / steroids long term to help keep Luna comfortable. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I'm sorry that Sheru is having this issue. Swelling like this can be caused by many different things: * allergic reaction * infection and/or foreign body * auto immune disease * cancer If the antibiotics have not helped then you will need to get Sheru back to the vet for another evaluation. He may need a course of anti-inflammatories or some additional testing to see what is causing the swelling. There is really not anything we can tell you to do for this over the internet, I'm sorry. Please get Sheru back to your vet for a follow-up exam as soon as you can. Best wishes.

It could be a tooth root abscess or a tumor in her maxilla (upper jaw bone) or in her nasal cavity. I recommend taking her to the Vet for an exam. Hello. That is a pretty nasty reaction/infection. I would definitely recommend antibiotics for a situation like this. Based on the picture you have provided, it appears that this could be bacterial or a skin parasite causing the lesion. The skin may need to be cultured and if a skin scraping has not been performed, I would certainly recommend having this done to make sure this is not due to a skin mite such as demodex. If this is not due to a mite and is still there, I would recommend a culture / biopsy of the area for a more definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the pictures you have provided, I would suspect this to be a skin tumor. It looks to be benign and similar to what we call a sebaceous adenoma. It may have been much smaller previously and if it was bumped or traumatized may have grown in size due to inflammation. If this is bleeding and does not go down in size, I would suggest having it removed. Many of these can be frozen off with cryo treatment that many vet clinics provide as a service.
