My dog is recovering from diarrhea. Is bloody mucus in stool normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 3.6 lbs

Monday night Bella was not herself, little appetite and had diarrhea 9 times that night out of nowhere. Took to vet next morning, sent stool to lab it was negative. Bloodwork came back great except Dr. Said one of WBC's was ever so slightly high probably due to gastro issues. Total was normal. Has been eating and acting more like herself. Had first stool in 24 hours, it was formed and a bit softer than normal and appeared to have mucus strings that were almost like blood in spots. Is this normal

Some mucus and blood streaks is quite common during recover, severe diarrhea episodes often cause some inflammation and injury to the lining of the bowel. Monitor closely for continued improvement or worsening signs
