Is mucus in my 12-week-old puppy's poop normal if she's fine?

As long as Aurora is eating, drinking, and acting normally without any significant coughing or sneezing, I would not be overly concerned about a bit of mucus in her stool or a mild running nose. If the mucus becomes a recurrent issue, it would be worth having her evaluated by the vet to assure that she doesn't have intestinal parasites or other concerns. If the runny nose worsens or if the discharge becomes yellow, green, or bloody, she would also need veterinary attention. Not to worry! On a side note, I would not recommend taking Aurora for walks around the neighborhood where she has access to any areas where other dogs have been previously until she has finished her vaccine series (over 16 weeks of age). She could acquire parvovirus, which is a serious gastrointestinal virus, from exposure to areas where infected dogs may have previously walked since this virus lives in the soil for years. Poor Luna! I can definitely understand being worried - it's always scary to see blood or other abnormalities in your dog's stool. The good news is, if she is eating and drinking normally, active, and not vomiting, it's extremely unlikely that she would have parvo or any other serious illness - puppies with parvo are usually very lethargic, not eating, and vomiting frequently. So it doesn't sound like this is likely to be an issue with Luna :) There are lots of things that could cause a milky substance like this with some traces of blood. Colitis, or irritation in the large intestine, can sometimes cause mucus with streaks or flecks of blood to be seen in the stool. This could also occur due to eating something she shouldn't have, or with a minor intestinal infection of some kind. She could also potentially have an infection in her anal glands, which are two scent glands located on either side of the rectum. If she is acting normal apart from this, it's not likely to be an emergency - but if the problem continues, it would be best to call your regular vet or take Luna in for a recheck exam to make sure that everything is okay.

There is always some mucus in stool. It aids in defecation. An increased amount can be due to some inflammation in the intestine. If she had intestinal parasites and was recently treated, this could be the cause. If she is behaving normally, you can monitor her at home. Consider a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

Anytime stool stays in the colon longer than normal (such as with mild constipation), it can become a little dry, so there will sometimes be mucous present from the colon secondary to irritation. That would also explain the small amount of red as well. If Loki develops diarrhea, is not continuing to pass stool normally, is not eating well, or is passing bloody stool, then I would recommend having your vet examine him again. Good luck! Hi there. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of things. Increased mucous makes me suspicious of parasites first. I would recommend taking your pup in to have a fecal. Based on the findings of this, you can choose how best to proceed after this easy step is ruled out. It may also be that Pandora has an upset stomach due to something she's eaten and has thrown her digestive system off. Think about if you have changed her food or given her anything she does not normally get. Hope this helps.

In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods. Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her.
