Why is my dog having bloody diarrhea after dental surgery and meds?

Unfortunately, bloody diarrhea often does not respond to at home treatment and may require a trip to your veterinarian. Since your veterinarian is likely closed today, you can certainly try a bland diet of 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones). If the bloody diarrhea continues with this diet, I would contact your veterinarian tomorrow. Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I am sorry to hear about your recent troubles with Nora's health. I have certainly heard of lots of different side effects long term from any sort of anesthetic procedure, the most common actually being changes to behavior. I have definitely also heard of animals that have come blind or deaf from anesthetic (though usually it is temporarily) episodes. While I can not say for sure what has happened in this case, I would definitely want to completely rule out the possibility of a coincidence first since we are dealing with such an elderly patient. I imagine that with an older patient, preoperative blood work was obtained and analyzed prior to placing her under anesthesia. If this was completely normal, I would definitely recommend having some x-rays and ultrasound imagine procured to rule out the presence of any sort of malignant process or signs of organ failure. If you are able to do this with at least a relative amount of certainty, this still doesn't resolve the issue. I would considering adding more fiber to the diet and a probiotic to see if this helps solidify the fecal material while investigating the cause. I don't want to sound grim, but at nearly 16 years of age there are a number of sinister things within the body that could be responsible for Nora's diarrhea unfortunately. The anesthetic event could have certainly compromised the immune system in such a way to make her susceptible to something that may have been lying in wait or brewing slowly. Yes. I would definitely take him to an emergency clinic immediately. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can come on very quickly and dogs can become very sick in a few hours. Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

There should never be blood in stools, so it is certainly abnormal. Some medications could cause bleeding in the GI tract, so I would stop any medications and call the vet for advice. He should be examined by a vet or emergency vet if additional symptoms develop, such as lethargy, poor appetite, or vomiting.
