My dog has bloody diarrhea 2 weeks after complex neuter. Urgent?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 months and 8 days old | 13 lbs

My dog was neutered 2 weeks ago. He had to have a more complex operation as one of his testicles hadn't descended. He has had diohrea for a few days now and today there is blood in it. Is this an urgent matter. I took him to the vet yesterday for a checkup and she said all was good.

There should never be blood in stools, so it is certainly abnormal. Some medications could cause bleeding in the GI tract, so I would stop any medications and call the vet for advice. He should be examined by a vet or emergency vet if additional symptoms develop, such as lethargy, poor appetite, or vomiting.

Blood in the stool and diarrhea is not normal after surgery, and is likely not related to the surgery. Flash's symptoms could be caused by parasites, stress, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. The symptoms could potentially be a side effect of medication, although if it has already been 7 days since the surgery and this just started, that is unlikely. Please make an appointment to have Flash seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as diarrhea and blood in the stool can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from Flash to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis.

That is extensive bruising and swelling. The best thing to do is ice pack it 3-4 times a day for 10 minutes to help. Anesthesia can cause vomiting and diarrhea along with the added stress of being at the vet. I would take away his food and water for the next 4-6 hours. Your vet may check some blood work to make sure there are no bleeding disorders and a urine sample to check for a secondary infection. pain medication and strict rest will be needed for the next week until that heals

My dog has bloody diarrhea after anal gland surgery. Is this normal?

This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Dog had spleen surgery. Is bloody stool a post-op complication?

It may just be blood from the inflammation in the intestines caused by the folding over. However, it could be a very serious indicator of illness, and I would recommend that Holly go to the vet today for a quick recheck. If she were coming into my hospital, I would start with a CBC to check white and red cell levels. I would also review her current medications to make sure they were addressing all of her current issues. She may even need to be hospitalized for continued monitoring. It sounds like she had major surgery! Many dogs will remain in the hospital for 1-3 days after splenectomy to monitor for signs of complications.

My dog is pooping blood after surgery. Is this normal or serious?

Hello and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern! After any surgery involving the GI tract, some bleeding can be normal. I would expect this to lessen and resolve after a week or so. If the bleeding becomes more pronounced or Scooby does not appear to be doing well, I would get him to your vet for a recheck as soon as possible. You should also periodically check his gum color. The gums should be nice and pink. If the gums are pale or pale pink, I would get him seen by your vet sooner rather than later. Please let me know if you have any other questions concerns. My dog has bloody stool but is acting normal. Is it an emergency?

If he’s otherwise normal you should be fine watching him tonight. He could have a ruptured anal abscess, or be passing a bone. He could also have a mass inside the rectum. Severe bloody diarrhea in a dog that is lethargic and not eating is a medical emergency but this sounds like he’s stable so bring him to your regular veterinarian in the morning so they can diagnose and treat his problem. My dog has bloody diarrhea after surgery and antibiotics. Should I worry?

Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

My dog has bloody poop. When should I call the vet and what to do?

I recommend to call your veterinarian today. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it.
