My dog just gave birth, why is she drinking a lot and has bloody poop?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed

My female dog gave birth about 2 weeks ago, and she has been acting strange. She drinks tons of water at a time, eats here and there, she's pretty thin to the point you can see her ribs. And she has been having blood in her stools. It comes and goes and today she went for the 2nd time after going the first, and nothing but blood came out of her.

Excessive water consumption, weight loss despite still eating can signal diabetes. If she is nursing puppies, that is the most likely cause for her weight loss. The blood is concerning, it could be anything from parasites, to a viral or bacterial infection, just to name a couple of possibilities. I recommend getting her in to see your vet right away for an exam and labwork. Also, while she is nursing puppies, she should have access to lots of fresh water and as much high calorie puppy food as she wants at all times.

My pregnant dog is sick, bleeding, and won't eat. Is this normal?

With these symptoms I worry that your dog may have a pyometra instead of being pregnant. Pyometras typically develop around 3-6 weeks after they go into heat and present as bloody discharge, lethargy, abdominal swelling, etc. I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian who can perform an ultrasound to make sure she isn't suffering from an infection.

Why is my dog drinking and peeing excessively after diarrhea?

If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.

Dog just gave birth. Is dark poop and bloody pee normal for new moms?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is unusual for a German Shephard to have only one puppy, so having an x-ray to make sure no more puppies are present is a good idea. Black poop is normal as the mother dog usually eats the placenta, and this turns the poop black. A bit of red in the pee can be normal, as there can be some inflammation and blood present in the vulva, however large amounts is not normal. Best of luck with Brownie and the puppy!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding ICE. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I worry that nursing the pups has placed a huge toll on her body. If this is the case, eclampsia or low blood calcium can result. This can be very serious and requires prompt care. Her veterinarian will be able to diagnose this with a blood sample.
