My dog has blood in her pee after spay. Is it a UTI or surgery?

You should call the vet and give him/her an update so they know what is going on with your dog. Your vet may want to see her or just ask you to bring in a urine sample to check for an infection. If she has a urinary tract infection, your vet may prescribe an antibiotic, unless she is already on an antibiotic post-spay.

It is not normal for blood to be present in a dog's urine, although it is possible to get a false positive on a urine dipstick. I would recommend having a veterinarian perform a microscopic examination of a urine sample. A urinary tract infection would be the most common cause of blood in the urine of a young dog.

Sometimes they will have discolored urine if there is still a little blood stuck in the vulva from the surgery or if they didn't drink much water yesterday. I would watch her closely and make sure she is getting plenty of water. There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

If Lily is peeing blood, I would be concerned that she has a UTI, bladder stones, or even bladder cancer. Unfortunately there is nothing you can give her at home, she has to see a vet for this problem. If she appears lethargic, ill or distressed, or if the urine appears very bloody, then she should be seen by a vet ASAP. In this case, please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. If she is otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until Monday morning. Feed her wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure she drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder.
