My dog has a blood blister on her paw. Is it serious? What to do?

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma (presence of foreign bodies) or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Allergic reactions can cause them as well in rare cases. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. If the problem is related to the presence of foreign bodies then a quick surgical procedure (sometimes even under local anesthetic) is needed to remove them. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hello, Harvey may have a little infected foreign body in his foot (like a sliver or thorn), or could be developing either a benign or cancerous mass. The best way to determine what it is would be to have Harvey checked by a vet. Your vet will likely take a small needle sample of the "blister" and look at those cells on the microscope to determine if it's anything concerning. I hope this helps!

This could be a “hot spot” from licking the cut excessively, related to a bug bite, a small abscess, or, like you suggest, a blood-filled pocket. If Sissy is licking or chewing at it, putting an E-collar on so she can’t lick it is critical for healing. If that doesn’t solve the problem after 3-5 days, or if it looks worse in any way, its time to take a visit to the vet to help determine the cause and best treatment. Good luck!

Poor Gizmo! That looks really sore. The lesion in the picture could be an abscess, a very large interdigital cyst or a tumor. I would recommend that you have Gizmo seen by your veterinarian. They may recommend a fine needle aspirate of the lesion to get a better idea of what is causing the swelling. Surgery may be required to lance and drain the abscess or remove a mass if present.

Oh goodness! That looks sore! It actually looks like it could be an infection of the toenail bed, or a tumor of the nail bed. Soaking in warm water with Epsom salts would be a good thing to do tonight until you are able to get him to a veterinarian tomorrow. This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.
