Is a little bleeding through the dressing normal after dog surgery?

Depending on the extent of the bleeding, it may or may not be significant. Small amounts of bleeding or red tinged discharge are to be expected for short periods of time following a surgical procedure. A steady flow or blood or thick discharge should be considered concerning. If the latter is occurring, I would seek out an emergency 24 hour veterinarian to assess the area. If this is not possible. you can apply a pressure bandage to the affected area to stem the flow of blood. You can do this with regular bandage material from a pharmacy and some surgical tape. A small amount of seeping is to be expected. Any active bleeding that won't stop should be addressed by your veterinarian. Bella should have an e-collar (cone) on to prevent licking ro chewing the sutures. Try to restrict her activity as much as you can. leash walk her when she has to go outside.

It can be normal to see a small amount of blood-tinged/clear fluid (what we term serosanguinous discharge) from an incision within the first 24-48 hours following a surgical procedure. This discharge will typically decrease in amount and should have resolved within 48 hours following surgery. Clinical signs that could indicate a problem with the incision (such as dehiscence or infection) or abdomen would include a swelling that was not previously noted that is painful and may be firm or fluid-filled, discharge that looks purulent (pus) or has a foul odor, extreme reddening of the incision, or if Ashleigh is exhibiting lethargy, fever, inappetance, vomiting, or diarrhea.

The patient becomes weak, pale and very lethargic. If he has any of these signs, then you need to seek emergency care right away. If he is eating, drinking and acting like himself, then it is more likely that he has some post-surgical swelling and bruising of the scrotum. The incision site itself appears to be healing well. I recommend following up with his veterinarian to ensure he does not require additional treatment. Hello. A little skin oozing is not unusual, but you might want to put a wrap around Max's abdomen. You can use any absorbent pads on the incision ( like a maxi pad ) & then secure the pad snugly, but not tightly with an overwrap using coban, vetwrap or even an ace bandage. If you see blood oozing through the bandage within hours, get him to an emergency clinic. Otherwise, just change the bandage twice a day until you see your vet. A little blood on the pad is OK. Hello and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern! After any surgery involving the GI tract, some bleeding can be normal. I would expect this to lessen and resolve after a week or so. If the bleeding becomes more pronounced or Scooby does not appear to be doing well, I would get him to your vet for a recheck as soon as possible. You should also periodically check his gum color. The gums should be nice and pink. If the gums are pale or pale pink, I would get him seen by your vet sooner rather than later. Please let me know if you have any other questions concerns.
