What signs should I watch for after my dog's stomach surgery?

Typically with dehiscence, they will be lethargic, not eating, have a fever (over 103) and just not themselves. While it takes time to recover from a surgery like this I would recommend having your veterinarian just examine Patton. I rather be safe then sorry, especially if you are concerned with his behavior at home. It may be normal for him post surgery but it may also be that he is very stoic and there is more going on. As a veterinarian I rather my clients bring the animals in to get looked at and it be nothing then wait it out and it be serious. From what I can tell it seems to be healing well. If she is showing any signs of sickness or the incisions don't continue to improve, get her in to see your vet for a recheck. Put the cone back on if she starts paying too much attention to her incisions and overgrooming. It is likely to still be itchy for some time as it heals.

It's important to make sure Panda is eating and drinking, and I would rest her as much as possible. She's not supposed to play as too much activity can lead to complications such as wound breakdown and a seroma (pocket of fluid). Check out her incision twice a day, and if you see any redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, those are signs of infection and she will need to see a vet. If there is just a little bleeding the. foxy should be OK. But if the bandaging material is getting soaked with blood that would suggest excessive bleeding and you should take Foxy back to the vet that performed the surgery or to an ER hospital.

Jaylee looks like a sweetie! If her spay was over a month ago, I agree that what she's showing is probably not related to the surgery. The main concern I have is that Jaylee is showing signs of pancreatitis. When a dog stretches out with their hind end in the air this is often a sign of abdominal pain associated with pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can occur after eating a high fat meal but it also can occur randomly. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas an results in vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Mild pancreatitis can be treated with medication and a special diet while more severe pancreatitis requires hospitalization. The other concern I have is that Jaylee could have eaten something she shouldn't have that is causing an obstruction. You can try offering Jaylee a small bland low fat diet of boiled chicken and rice for her next meal. However, if she continues to show signs of abdominal pain and vomiting I'd recommend she see a veterinarian. She may need blood work, X-rays or medication to get her back on the right track. It can be normal to see a small amount of blood-tinged/clear fluid (what we term serosanguinous discharge) from an incision within the first 24-48 hours following a surgical procedure. This discharge will typically decrease in amount and should have resolved within 48 hours following surgery. Clinical signs that could indicate a problem with the incision (such as dehiscence or infection) or abdomen would include a swelling that was not previously noted that is painful and may be firm or fluid-filled, discharge that looks purulent (pus) or has a foul odor, extreme reddening of the incision, or if Ashleigh is exhibiting lethargy, fever, inappetance, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Oh dear, poor Miki! Immediately after this type of surgery, Miki may be a bit quieter for the next few days as he recovers. After this time, most dogs return to their normal selves without any change in personality or temperament - usually within 10-14 days. He will likely require a hospital stay after surgery to assure that he seems to be healing well and is not experiencing severe pain. For the 10-14 days following surgery, try to keep him quiet and prevent any running, jumping, or playing, as this could delay healing and lead to bigger problems. He will also need to wear some form of an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from licking at the incision and pulling out any sutures or staples. On a personal note, one of my dogs also had surgery to remove foreign material and bounced back to his normal self after the post-operative recovery period.
