My dog is pooping blood after surgery. Is this normal or serious?

It really depends on the type of surgery done, but this is not usually normal and indicates a problem within the intestines. Diarrhea is sometimes seen after surgery. This can be due to the drugs used for the surgery, stress of surgery, or possibly an infection. I recommend taking Boss in for a check-up to the vet that did the surgery. This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Chances of recovery would depend on the damage that has affected the stomach before resection. I can say that usually chances are fairly good. A small amount of blood is perfectly normal after this type of surgery and some vomiting episodes as well (both are due to the surgery and gastrointestinal inflammation). It may just be blood from the inflammation in the intestines caused by the folding over. However, it could be a very serious indicator of illness, and I would recommend that Holly go to the vet today for a quick recheck. If she were coming into my hospital, I would start with a CBC to check white and red cell levels. I would also review her current medications to make sure they were addressing all of her current issues. She may even need to be hospitalized for continued monitoring. It sounds like she had major surgery! Many dogs will remain in the hospital for 1-3 days after splenectomy to monitor for signs of complications.

Hello, thank you for you question about Lou. Since Lou is otherwise acting normal and his stool is fairly normal in consistency I would not be extremely worried about a small amount of blood. There are small blood vessels in the colon wall that can rupture and lead to blood in the feces. If a pet strains a large amount to defecate or they are experiencing inflammation in their colon wall this can lead to exposure/rupture of these blood vessels. If Lou is on any medications post-operatively or is working harder to defecate due to his recovery process that could be the reason for the blood. If the amount of blood progresses, he develops diarrhea, or becomes lethargic/inappetant I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
