My dog has bleeding pink sores around his whiskers. What should I do?

It could be caused by a bacterial infection, ringworm, demodex, allergic dermatitis, autoimmune disease, etc. Since it is bleeding, it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at the lesions to determine the cause. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to help treat the problem. They may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause.

I cannot pinpoint exactly what is going on but Bruno could have an ear infection with so much itching that he caused damage to his face. He could also be itchy following a bite from an insect or even a snake. I suggest you take him to the veterinarian as soon as you can. What you describe, does not sound comfortable at all for Bruno. Possible causes are a deep bacterial skin infection (deep pyoderma), demodex (non-contagious mite) and Juvenile Cellulitus (puppy strangles). I recommend you take the to the Vet. Consider having a skin scrape done to check for mites or prophylactically put them on Nexgard or Bravecto (get demodex mites as well as fleas and ticks) and start them on an antibiotic. They usually need to be on antibiotics for several weeks. I would also change their food bowls to metal if they are plastic. Puppy strangles is an immune condition that requires high doses of steroids. I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. That appears to be a bacterial infection of the hair follicle around the mouth. Moisture around the mouth from eating and drinking can contribute. You could try a topical antibacterial wipe ( like an acne pad) after meals for the next few days. If that doesn't help you may need to see a veterinarian for oral antibiotics or other medications.
