My dog has a black scab that's growing and bleeding. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Sable to the vet to look at the growth closer and find out what it is. The vet can stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope to determine if it’s cancerous or not. Because the tissue/skin is fragile it likely won’t stop bleeding and may need to be surgically removed. I would leave it alone until the vet looks at it so you don’t disrupt the blood clot that forms. Good luck and kisses to Sable!

That looks like a healing wound based on the picture alone. However, without actually touching and seeing this sort of thing in person it is difficult to say this with certainty. If you feel like the area is bothering Daedra or that it is starting to spread, then the issue is likely something entirely different. Monitor it for continued healing or worsening, and go to a vet if the latter occurs.

These small scabs, or crusts, could be due to an injury like a fight/bite wound or could be due to an allergy. Allergies can cause a dog to be very itchy and can lead to a skin infection that can look very much like the pictures you have shared. If the spots are widespread throughout the coat I would recommend taking Magic in to your vet to be examined. If there are just a few spots, then you can try treating them topically with some antibiotic ointment to get them to clear up. I hope this helps. It doesn't appear to be related to fleas. It could be an injury but it could also be the start of a tumor. I would recommend you leave it alone and monitor it for about a week. Don't pick at it or apply anything to it. If it is just a scab from an injury it should be much improved if not all the way healed in that time frame. If it is virtually the same or just a tad bit improved then I would have your vet check that spot out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This is a pretty significant wound on Nova. The top layer of her skin is missing and the black tissue (likely muscle) is dying (necrotic). I would recommend that Nova get checked out by a vet ASAP for proper treatment. She likely needs to be sedated to have the dead tissue removed so it will heal without infection.
