Why are bloody, crusty scabs spreading on my dog's face and neck?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 35 lbs

My dog has had these pussy bloody black crusty scabs on her mouth and lips (not internal but external) and they are spreading to her cheek area and under her neck.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know without an examination. However, this is possibly due to a severe infection or even a growth is possible. I would highly recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

It looks like she has a skin infection, likely secondary to having allergies. You can bathe her with a medicated shampoo, like Douxo Chlorhexidine, and see if the lesions resolve. Otherwise, she needs to be examined by a vet for an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a focal infection. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Sable to the vet to look at the growth closer and find out what it is. The vet can stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope to determine if it’s cancerous or not. Because the tissue/skin is fragile it likely won’t stop bleeding and may need to be surgically removed. I would leave it alone until the vet looks at it so you don’t disrupt the blood clot that forms. Good luck and kisses to Sable!

My dog has a scab-like spot on her snout with no injury. What is it?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This area can be either a localized demodex infection, a bacterial infection or a fungal infection (ringworm has to be considered). Thyroid disease can also be considered. If the area of hairloss and scabbing does not improve or completely resolve within 1-2 weeks, then I would recommend taking Indy to your local vet to have the skin tested. If it does not improve, then the appropriate medication (depeding on her skin test results) can be prescribed for Indy to help this resolve. Bset of luck with Indy and her skin. Take care.

My dog has scabs, bald spots, and bleeding. Should I see a vet?

These small scabs, or crusts, could be due to an injury like a fight/bite wound or could be due to an allergy. Allergies can cause a dog to be very itchy and can lead to a skin infection that can look very much like the pictures you have shared. If the spots are widespread throughout the coat I would recommend taking Magic in to your vet to be examined. If there are just a few spots, then you can try treating them topically with some antibiotic ointment to get them to clear up. I hope this helps. Why does my dog have spreading, crusty, bloody skin patches?

Hello. Wowzo is developing a pretty severe dermatitis possibly due to an allergic reaction. This has led to a staph infection. He needs to be treated with a short-acting steroid & started either on an antibiotic or a medicated shampoo to help the skin to heal. Then, you & your veterinarian will try to figure out why this happened & what needs to be done to control or prevent the same thing from happening again. My dog has small red bumps, scabs, or pimples on skin. What is it?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see the small red bumps your are referring to, and agree that they appear scabbed over. This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

My dog has crusty scabs. Is it an emergency? What can I do now?

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While I don't think this is an emergency, I would get Nemo in to see a veterinarian as soon as you can. I strongly suspect that there is an infection in his skin and he is probably very uncomfortable. Until you can take him to the vet I would clean the area with an antiseptic solution such as dilute betadine (to the color of weak tea) or hibiclens. Both of these should be available at your local drug store. Then dry it well and apply a thin layer of topical triple antibiotic ointment. Do this twice daily. I hope that Nemo feels better soon!

Why is my dog's swollen snout bloody and spreading to her legs?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This actually looks pretty serious. It could be an allergic reaction of some kind, a bacterial or fungal infection, or an autoimmune disease. I really think you should take her to a vet for an exam. If it is starting in other locations on her body then then I would be very worried about this being an autoimmune disease (such as pemphigus). This is not something that you will be able to treat at home.
