My dog has black poop, bloody eye, and is very sick. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I noticed in one of those pictures that his stool is really diarrhea and is black (which usually means a sign of bleeding). Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. In addition, black stools can be indicative of bleeding into the small intestine or stomach which can happen secondary to an ulcer for instance. Bloody urine can be the result of an infection, stones, tumors, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. When there is evidence of black stools that can be a sign of gastrointestinal ulceration for example. recommend that you have Pepper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Vomiting and bloody stools can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. If he is having seizures that make this very serious as this is possibly unrelated and could be seen with conditions such as low blood sugar from vomiting, brain inflammation, epilepsy, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics and possibly an MRI. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. The tar like appearance to his stool is likely due to digested blood, indicating bleeding in the GI tract of some kind (a growth, an ulcer, secondary to toxin ingestion, etc.). I would have him seen, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, bloodwork), and get started on treatment to resolve his issues (GI protectant, anti-nausea medication, anti-diarrheal, antacids, for example). Reasons for blood in the stool include colitis, intestinal parasites and dietary indiscretion and some possible reasons of blood in the urine include urinary tract infections, urinary stones and even tumors. I would advise that if this continues, worsens, or other signs develop, you should take her to your vet immediately. Dark stools like this can be an indication of bleeding into the intestinal tract or stomach. This could be due to an ulcer that has developed and is bleeding, something she ate, among other things. It also looks like there is a lot of mucous or gel-like substance which can indicate that something is irritating the lower intestinal tract or the colon. Again, this can be something she ate or intestinal parasites (whipworms in particular). Your vet can take a detailed history and perform a thorough physical examination. Once those are done, they can advise you on a diagnostic/treatment plan. Possible tests include fecal, blood, urine tests and possibly some x-rays to start out. Good luck with Penelope.

Black tarry stools can be observed with upper gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Things like parvovirus, gastrointestinal ulcers or parasites, among other possibilities can cause that.
