Why is my dog vomiting and having runny black, bloody stools?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I noticed in one of those pictures that his stool is really diarrhea and is black (which usually means a sign of bleeding). Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. In addition, black stools can be indicative of bleeding into the small intestine or stomach which can happen secondary to an ulcer for instance. Bloody urine can be the result of an infection, stones, tumors, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. I would advise that if this continues, worsens, or other signs develop, you should take her to your vet immediately. Dark stools like this can be an indication of bleeding into the intestinal tract or stomach. This could be due to an ulcer that has developed and is bleeding, something she ate, among other things. It also looks like there is a lot of mucous or gel-like substance which can indicate that something is irritating the lower intestinal tract or the colon. Again, this can be something she ate or intestinal parasites (whipworms in particular). Your vet can take a detailed history and perform a thorough physical examination. Once those are done, they can advise you on a diagnostic/treatment plan. Possible tests include fecal, blood, urine tests and possibly some x-rays to start out. Good luck with Penelope.

Black stool could indicate blood in the stool. Vomiting, and black stool could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. In the case of an unspayed female dog , pyometra (a potentially fatal infection of the uterus) is a possibility as well, and this is very concerning. Please have Cassie seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as vomiting and possible blood in the stool can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from Cassie to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

If he is having seizures that make this very serious as this is possibly unrelated and could be seen with conditions such as low blood sugar from vomiting, brain inflammation, epilepsy, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics and possibly an MRI. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. If Honey is vomiting, especially vomiting blood, she needs to go to the veterinarian. This could indicate a toxicity such as rat poison, a hereditary coagulation disorder given her age and she's bleeding inside, or even if she got into something like an anti-inflammatory and bleeding stomach ulcer. It could also indicate G.I. parasites causing digested blood in her GI tract. However anytime we see blood in the vomit and dark tarry stool's we become very concerned about life-threatening anemia. Do not give Honey any human medication including anything like Pepcid, Pepto-Bismol, or Zantac until she is examined by a veterinarian.

Aw poor Jacky Gill! I'm very concerned about the blood in the vomit as this can indicate serve Gastrointestinal inflammation or ulcer formation. Jacky should see a veterinarian right away as he likely needs prescription medication to stop the vomiting and diarrhea. He may need fluids to help rehydrate him. It may also be a good idea to have X-rays done to ensure there is no intestinal blockage. Once he has received medical care a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice may also help him recover. Black, tar-like stools are common with bleeding in the stomach, upper GI tract. Bleeding that occurs lower in the GI tract with have red blood in the stools. I have never needed a human test to check for blood in the GI tract. Gastroenteritis is a common cause for blood in vomit and/or stools. Some cases are mild and respond to medications and out-patient treatment, while others, such as HGE, require hospitalization, IV fluids, and IV medications. Some dogs will have very dark stools that are normal and do not contain blood.
