My dog has black crust on one side of his mouth. Is it serious?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Seb has a skin infection around his mouth. Staffy's commonly have a microscopic skin mite called demodex. I recommend taking Seb to a vet to scrape the skin for the mite and treat the infection with antibiotics. Good luck and kisses to Seb!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I would suspect a toxin that was ingested or a systemic disease that is causing abnormal bleeding into the surrounding tissues of the body. Please, take Prince to your local vets as he will likely need a cream / ointment with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory agent. These medications are prescription-only, so they must be prescribed by a vet.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having a vet take a look at his mouth as he may have oral pain due to severe dental disease. If he has caused mouth sores from rubbing his mouth on the carpet, you can use zymox topical ointment or malacetic conditioning spray to help relieve any discomfort from the sores and prevent secondary infection.
