My dog has white crusty skin around his mouth. What's wrong?

It’s not emergent, but I would recommend your parents taking him to a vet for an exam, diagnosis and treatment. They may need to look at his skin under the microscope. There are some juvenile skin diseases we can see in puppies that can cause a similar appearance to what you are noting, such as Demodectic mange or chronic bacterial/yeast infections. A diagnosis is typically achieved through a skin scrape (to look for Demodex mites) and a skin cytology to look for bacteria or yeast. If all of these diseases are ruled out and Django does not respond to typical treatment (topical medicated shampoos, parasite preventatives, antibiotics, etc.) then additional diagnostics such as a biopsy may be recommended. I would recommend having Django evaluated by his veterinarian if this has been going on for some time and especially if it is worsening.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like dog acne which can occur from eating or drinking water from a dirty bowl. The best way to prevent this is by keeping the water and food bowls very clean. If he has been itchy, you may get an e-collar from your local pet store to prevent further scratching trauma to the area. Keep this as clean as possible. You can use soapy water. This usually resolves on its own. Good luck!

This looks like a bacterial and possibly yeast in his skin folds from his saliva. This is really common in larger dogs with large lip folds. You could try to use some medicated wipes like miconahex-triz wipes. If it isn't healing, then I would have your vet take a look at it. He will likely need some antibiotics and possibly an anti-fungal medicine to help this heal. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having a vet take a look at his mouth as he may have oral pain due to severe dental disease. If he has caused mouth sores from rubbing his mouth on the carpet, you can use zymox topical ointment or malacetic conditioning spray to help relieve any discomfort from the sores and prevent secondary infection. Please, take Prince to your local vets as he will likely need a cream / ointment with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory agent. These medications are prescription-only, so they must be prescribed by a vet.
