My small dog has belly pain. Can I give him meds before the vet?

I do not recommend giving over the counter medication such as Tums to Lyle. If you think he is in pain you are likely correct, and that warrants a trip to your veterinarian to see why Lyle is uncomfortable. What looks like stomach pain can be due to pancreatitis/ inflammation of the pancreas, back pain, infection, a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract due to a mass or ingestion or a foreign object. Your vet should be able to help figure out what is going on and formulate an appropriate treatment plan for Lyle. I hope he feels better soon!

Tramadol can cause some GI upset, however if he is off the meds and still appearing in pain or ill it may indicate something else going on. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if it settles his stomach. However, if he is actively vomiting, or the site of the neuter appears very red or swollen, then having him rechecked by your vet is best to rule out any problems.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for her at home. You cannot give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In addition, it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to prescribe any medications for her without seeing her in person first. There will be a vet on call for the holidays, so I would call your local clinics to find the vet on call to see her now. Usually there is an emergency contact number on their website or their answering machine. I would find a vet to see her now if she is in a lot of pain.

If she is a small breed dog, neck or back pain are common sources of pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm causing the dog intense pain. In worst case scenarios, pressure can be put on the spinal cord resulting in neurological problems. If this is not the case, abdominal pain from GI upset or even constipation could be the source of pain. Her examination should tell the doctor the source of her pain so that treatment recommendations can be made. Keep her very quiet up until her appointment this afternoon. It it upsets his stomach you shouldn't give it again, it has the potential to cause a stomach ulcer and it will be much worse if it happens. he needs new meds that won't affect his stomach as much, and you can only get it from the vet.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any specific treatment because there are many different possible causes. He could have intestinal parasites, an intestinal obstruction, gastroenteritis, or an endocrine or metabolic disease (issue with internal organs that is making him feel overall crappy, rather than something specifically wrong with the intestinal tract). Additionally, many medications for humans aren't safe for our pups. He really does need to go to the vet for further testing and treatment. You can also talk to the vet about giving him anti-anxiety medications for future visits to help with his anxiety. I hope he's feeling better soon.
